What are silicone breast implants?

Breast augmentation surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to increase breast volume and enhance their shape. We use only modern, high-quality implants filled with cohesive gel silicone, which means that the silicone retains its shape and cannot leak into the tissue should the shell, against all odds, rupture. During your initial consultation with the surgeon, we will assess the anatomy of your chest to determine which type of implant is best suited to your physical characteristics.

Our techniques for breast augmentation surgery

At The Faculty, we use surgical techniques based on sound scientific principles and extensive clinical experience. The choice of method and silicone implants is always tailored to your anatomical profile, skin quality and existing tissue to achieve a balanced silhouette.

Classic silicone breasts (volume and shape)

This is the primary method for achieving a noticeable increase in volume and a stable shape. Through a strategically placed incision, the surgeon creates a pocket into which the silicone implant is inserted. Depending on whether you prefer a fuller upper pole or a more teardrop-shaped appearance, we choose between round or anatomical implants. The procedure requires great precision to ensure high symmetry and minimise the visibility of scars.

Hybrid method for natural silicone breast implants
<p style="font-size: clamp(16px, 1.2vw, 17px)"For patients with very thin subcutaneous tissue, the edge of a silicone implant can sometimes be faintly visible through the skin. To achieve completely natural-looking silicone breasts, we can then combine the implant with gentle liposuction, where we extract the patient’s own fat (often from the abdomen) and inject it around the edges of the implant. This softens the transition to the chest and provides an exceptionally natural feel.

Silicone breast implants combined with a breast lift

In cases where our clinical assessment reveals a significant loss of skin elasticity, we often recommend combining the breast augmentation with a surgical lift. By first removing excess skin and then inserting the implant, we can stabilise the position of the breast and create a firmer structure that the skin alone is unable to maintain.

Silicone breast implant replacement

For those of you who have previously undergone breast surgery and now wish to change the size or shape of your implants, or who need to replace your old implants for medical reasons, we offer specialised revision surgery. The procedure often involves gently removing the old scar capsule and adjusting the pocket for the new implant, to ensure a continued safe and anatomically balanced profile.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of the size or shape chosen, we use modern instruments that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate breast tissue. This is essential for reducing bleeding and swelling after the operation, which in turn promotes a smoother healing process and lowers the risk of capsular contracture (hard scar tissue).

Consultation prior to breast augmentation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will be given a specific treatment proposal tailored to your body. After the consultation, you will have at least seven days to consider the matter and decide, at your leisure, whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Silicone breasts
Step by step

To ensure that your treatment experience is as safe as possible, we have a quality-assured process from consultation through to a fully healed result.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet one of our qualified plastic surgeons, who will assess your anatomical characteristics. You will discuss your expectations in detail and try on different sizes of sports bras to find the right volume for your body.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Our coordinator will provide you with important information. Among other things, you will need to stop smoking and drinking alcohol for four weeks beforehand. You should also wash with chlorhexidine soap before you arrive.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

Once there, the surgical site will be photographed and you will meet your anaesthesia team. The procedure is then carried out under fully sterile conditions whilst you are under anaesthesia and usually takes between one and two hours to complete.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up in the recovery room under constant supervision. It is normal to feel pressure across your chest and muscle soreness. We will ensure that you are receiving adequate pain relief before you are discharged to go home.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The first week is all about rest. You will need to wear a special recovery bra around the clock. Physical exertion, exercise that raises your heart rate, and arm movements above shoulder height must be strictly avoided for the first four to six weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

Around seven to fourteen days after the procedure, you will see a nurse who will check your scars and the healing process. A final follow-up appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled in about six months’ time.

Results of silicone breast implants

The final result of your operation is always unique to your body. Immediately after the procedure, your breasts will sit high and feel very tight. As the chest muscle relaxes and the skin stretches, the implants will gradually settle into their final position (known as ‘drop and fluff’). This process is completely normal and is determined by your genetic skin elasticity. The swelling subsides in stages, and we will assess the permanent anatomical result with you after approximately six months.

This in-depth expertise is our guarantee that you will receive care of the very highest medical standard, with a genuine focus on anatomical adaptation and symmetry.

Who is eligible for surgery?

The procedure is available to anyone over the age of 18 who is in good physical health. During the consultation, we will go through your health declaration in detail. Conditions affecting the immune system, bleeding disorders or active smoking are factors that may constitute medical contraindications for surgery, as our primary responsibility is always to ensure your physical safety during anaesthesia and recovery.

Potential risks associated with silicone breast implants

As with all surgical procedures, there is a risk of complications such as infection, bleeding or changes in sensation in the nipples. Specifically with silicone implants, there is also a risk of capsular contracture, which means that the body’s natural scar tissue around the implant becomes too hard and tightens. During your consultation, the surgeon will objectively explain how often these complications occur and how we at The Faculty work to prevent them.

Other treatments in breast surgery

Sometimes silicone breast implants aren’t the only option, or the right one. For example, if you have asymmetry that you wish to correct without implants, or if you have previously had surgery and now wish to replace or remove your implants completely (explantation), our surgeons have the expertise required to guide you through all the options.

Why choose silicone breast implants?

The decision to undergo breast surgery is always based on your own preferences. Many women choose to come to us to restore the fullness of their breasts following weight loss, breastfeeding or pregnancy. Others lack basic volume and wish to achieve a specific anatomical proportion, whether the goal is small silicone implants that provide a discreet profile, or a more significant increase in volume. We do not judge your choice, but focus entirely on designing a medically safe plan that suits your body type.

Frequently asked questions about silicone breast implants

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers about silicone breast implants

How much do silicone breast implants cost?

The price depends on the type of implant chosen and whether the procedure needs to be combined with other techniques, such as a facelift or fat transfer. Following your consultation, you will receive an accurate and binding quote based on your treatment plan. (See our starting prices in the ‘Price’ section).

Can you breastfeed if you have silicone breast implants?

This is a common and important question. For the vast majority of women, breastfeeding with silicone implants works perfectly well. The surgical technique is designed to avoid damaging milk ducts and nerves as far as possible. However, there is always a small risk that any type of breast surgery may affect your ability to breastfeed, which the surgeon will explain during your consultation.

How long do silicone breast implants last?

Today’s modern silicone implants are extremely durable and are designed to last a long time. However, they are not considered a lifetime product. It is not the implant itself that ‘expires’, but rather the body’s own tissue that often changes over the years (due to ageing or pregnancy, for example), which is why some patients choose to have them replaced after 10–15 years.

How do you choose the right size for silicone breast implants?

The size is determined in consultation with you and your surgeon. We always take into account the width of your chest (base width) and the elasticity of your skin to ensure that the implant fits safely within the tissue. During the consultation, you will be able to try on so-called ‘sizers’ in a bra to get a visual idea of the volume.

When can I start training my chest muscles again?

Light walks are good for blood circulation immediately after the operation. However, you should wait about four weeks before doing any exercise that raises your heart rate, and specific strength training of the chest and arm muscles must often be avoided for at least six to eight weeks so as not to affect the position of the implants.

Can I have a mammogram if I have breast implants?

Yes, it is perfectly fine to take part in the national breast screening programme (mammography) even if you have had silicone breast implants fitted. However, it is important that you inform the radiology staff about your implants before the examination begins. They will then use a special, gentle technique to obtain clear images of your natural breast tissue without subjecting the implants to unnecessary pressure.

What happens if a silicone implant were to rupture?

The implants we use today are made of dimensionally stable cohesive gel silicone. If, contrary to expectations, the outer shell of an implant were to tear or rupture – for example, following severe external trauma – the cohesive structure ensures that the silicone gel does not leak into the surrounding tissue. Instead, the gel remains inside the scar capsule that the body has naturally formed. If a rupture is suspected, an ultrasound scan is performed, and the implant is then replaced to ensure your medical safety.
