What does tummy tuck surgery involve?

Abdominal liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove localised fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise. Through small incisions, a thin cannula is inserted to gently suction out fat cells. The method can be used on both the upper and lower abdomen and combined with liposuction of the love handles to sculpt a more cohesive contour.

Our liposuction techniques

We use scientifically proven and safe methods to remove excess fat and reshape the area around the stomach and waist.

Traditional liposuction

Ideal for removing localised fat deposits when the skin still has sufficient elasticity to tighten around the new contour.

Liposuction of the love handles and hips

A targeted procedure that is often performed on its own or in combination with a tummy tuck to create a flatter and more uniform contour across the entire waist area.

Tummy tuck and abdominal liposuction

If the main issue is a large amount of excess skin or separated abdominal muscles, liposuction alone is rarely sufficient. In such cases, a tummy tuck is recommended, which is very often combined with liposuction to achieve the very best anatomical result.

Gentle approach

Regardless of the area being treated, our specialists always use advanced liposuction techniques that minimise trauma to the surrounding tissue. By using very fine cannulas and a precise approach, we can effectively reduce bleeding and swelling during the procedure itself. This not only promotes a smoother and safer recovery, but is also crucial to ensuring that the millimetre-sized entry points heal optimally and remain as discreet as possible.

The Evolution of You

Abdominal liposuction
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how an abdominal procedure is carried out, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a plastic surgery specialist who will assess your body fat distribution, skin quality and abdominal muscles in order to recommend the safest and most effective method.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Our coordinator will provide you with written instructions. It is an absolute medical requirement that you refrain from using any tobacco for four weeks before and after the operation to ensure proper wound healing.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will get changed at the clinic, and the surgeon will mark out the surgical area. The procedure is then usually carried out under general anaesthetic for your complete safety and comfort.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be closely monitored in our recovery ward. Your stomach will be swollen and tender to the touch. We will fit you with a compression garment and ensure you receive adequate pain relief. You will be discharged and can go home the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

You should rest at home for the first few days and wear your compression garment around the clock. Light walks are fine, but you must avoid any form of exercise that raises your heart rate for at least four weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After about a week, you will see a nurse for an initial check-up of the small puncture marks. After about six months, you will have a final check-up with your surgeon to assess how well the wound has healed.

Results of tummy tuck surgery

The results of tummy tuck surgery become increasingly apparent as the swelling subsides, often after 3–6 months. When reviewing before and after photos of tummy tucks, we can see how individual anatomical conditions affect the final result. Factors such as skin quality and the location of the fat (under the skin versus around the organs) are crucial to how well the skin tightens.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

The Faculty employs hand-picked plastic surgeons, several of whom are sought after nationally and internationally for their expertise in advanced body contouring. By ensuring that only qualified and highly dedicated specialists perform these precise procedures, we guarantee high medical standards, patient safety and anatomically sound results.

Who is eligible for tummy tuck surgery?

To be eligible for cosmetic surgery, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general health. A key factor in the outcome is the skin’s elasticity; liposuction requires that the skin is able to tighten up afterwards. In cases of significant excess skin or separated abdominal muscles, a tummy tuck is often recommended instead. It is also important to understand that liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method, and you should therefore be close to your ideal weight.

Complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. These may include general surgical risks such as bleeding, infection or a prolonged healing process. Abdominal liposuction also carries specific aesthetic and medical risks, such as unevenness in the skin’s contour, fluid build-up (seroma) under the skin, or temporary changes in sensation in the surgical area. Depending on the elasticity of your skin, there may also sometimes be a risk that the skin does not fully retract. During your consultation, the surgeon will carefully go through all potential risks, as well as how we at The Faculty work medically and preventatively to minimise them.

Other body contouring treatments

If liposuction alone is not sufficient to achieve the desired result, we offer advanced surgical procedures such as a full tummy tuck in Stockholm. We also perform body contouring procedures for the breasts, thighs and back, and we always assess your anatomy to determine which procedures can be safely combined under a single anaesthetic.

Why consider tummy tuck surgery?

Many men and women find that fat deposits around the abdomen, hips or love handles are difficult to reduce, even with an active and healthy lifestyle. For example, it is very common to consider tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, when the body’s tissue has undergone natural changes. Wanting to reshape the body’s contours is a personal choice that is solely about how you want to feel comfortable in your own body. We listen carefully to your reasons and then create a medically sound, realistic treatment plan that is entirely tailored to your body’s unique proportions.

Frequently asked questions about abdominal liposuction

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about abdominal liposuction

Is tummy tuck surgery different for men?

The procedure is the same, but anatomically speaking, men often store fat more centrally around the stomach and on the love handles. In men, so-called visceral fat (fat located deep within the organs) is also more common. Unfortunately, this internal fat cannot be removed by liposuction; we can only remove the superficial subcutaneous fat. This is carefully assessed during the consultation.

Will there be large scars after tummy tuck surgery?

No. The insertion points used for the cannulas are usually only three to five millimetres in size. These are positioned very strategically, often concealed in the navel or in natural skin folds, which means that the scars are extremely discreet once they have faded.

Is it possible to have liposuction on the stomach after pregnancy?

Yes, tummy tucks following pregnancy are a common procedure to address stubborn pockets of fat that have not disappeared. However, it is important to wait until the body has fully recovered and your weight has stabilised.

Can you have a tummy tuck and liposuction on the stomach at the same time?

Yes, it is a very common and frequently recommended combination. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens separated abdominal muscles, whilst liposuction sculpts the waist and hips. Together, they produce the most comprehensive anatomical result.

When can you see the results of tummy tuck surgery?

The final shape gradually becomes apparent as the internal swelling in the tissue subsides. This is a healing process that requires patience, and the final result can usually only be assessed after six to twelve months.

Will the fat on my stomach disappear permanently?

The fat cells that are surgically removed are not regenerated. This means that the reduction in volume in the areas treated by liposuction is permanent. However, it is important to maintain a stable weight after the procedure, as any remaining fat cells in the area may increase in size if you gain weight.

Is there a risk of loose skin on my stomach afterwards?

How the skin tightens depends largely on age, genetics and your skin’s natural elasticity. If our specialists assess that there is a risk of excess skin, we often recommend a combination treatment involving skin tightening (Laser/Renuvion). In cases of significant excess skin, a tummy tuck may be the most suitable option for a firm result.
