What does an ear correction procedure involve?

Ear surgery is a cosmetic and functional surgical procedure that addresses the shape, angle or size of the ear. The most common procedure is to correct protruding ears, whereby the surgeon reshapes the ear cartilage to bring the outer ear closer to the head. The procedure also includes techniques to reduce ears that are perceived as disproportionately large, as well as earlobe surgery to correct stretched or split earlobes. During your consultation, a thorough clinical analysis of your cartilage and skin will be carried out to determine which surgical method is anatomically best suited to you.

Our approaches to ear surgery

We use tried-and-tested, safe surgical techniques to ensure the highest level of patient safety. Our specialists carefully assess which type of liposuction is the most medically appropriate option for your individual anatomy, in order to achieve a balanced and natural result.

Surgery for protruding ears

An incision is made behind the ear to expose the cartilage. The surgeon can then trim, shape and secure the cartilage using permanent internal sutures to create the missing fold and tuck the ear back against the head.

Ear reduction

This involves reducing the size of the ear itself or the earlobe, often by removing a wedge of cartilage and skin.

Ear lobe reconstruction (suturing the ear lobe)

A precision procedure in which stretched-out holes or completely split earlobes are reconstructed by removing scar tissue and suturing the earlobe together in several fine layers.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical technique is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use microsurgical instruments that minimise trauma to the thin skin and cartilage. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and that your scars are extremely discreet.

Consultation before your operation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

The surgeon examines the structure and elasticity of the cartilage. We discuss whether the procedure should be performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have had time to think it over, the operation will be booked. It is essential that you do not smoke at all for four weeks before and after the operation to ensure optimal wound healing.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to hospital. The procedure usually takes 1–2 hours. A discreet incision is made at the back of the ear, the cartilage is reshaped and sutured into its new position.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest at the clinic. Wrap it around your head and ears, like a headband. Most people can go home the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The large dressing is usually removed after about a week. After that, you will need to wear a wide headband around the clock at first, and then at night for several weeks to protect the cartilage from bending whilst you sleep.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We will schedule regular check-ups to remove any stitches (if they do not dissolve) and monitor the healing process. A final check-up will take place after six months.

Results following ear surgery

Healing cartilage requires a little extra patience. During the first few weeks (following ear surgery), it is perfectly normal for the ears to be swollen, bruised and feel tender or tight. The swelling will gradually subside, but the cartilage needs a long time to stabilise in its new position. It is absolutely crucial for the final result that the ears do not fold forward during the healing phase. The anatomical final result is medically assessed after approximately six months.

Our specialists in facial surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of facial surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for ear surgery?

To undergo cosmetic surgery at our clinic, you must be at least 18 years old (for adult protruding ear surgery) and in good general health. A thorough medical assessment will be carried out during the consultation. It is also an absolute medical requirement that you are completely smoke-free before and after your operation, as nicotine restricts blood flow to the thin skin flaps on the ear and significantly increases the risk of cell death and infection.

Complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as bleeding, infection or uneven scarring. With cartilage surgery, there is a specific risk that the cartilage may partially ‘spring back’, which can create a slight asymmetry between the ears that, in rare cases, requires a minor adjustment. It is also common to experience temporary numbness on the outer ear and the back of the ear. Your surgeon will explain all the risks in detail during your consultation.

Other treatments in ear surgery

Many patients associate ear surgery solely with protruding ears, but we also perform many procedures involving the earlobe. A common request involves suturing the earlobe after ‘gauging’ or where the earring has worn through the skin. This is a minor but highly precise procedure that is often carried out smoothly under local anaesthetic, with excellent aesthetic results.

Why consider ear surgery?

The decision to change the position or shape of one’s ears is a personal choice. In the case of protruding ears, the cause is almost exclusively genetic; it is usually due to the absence of the cartilage’s natural fold or an unusually deep inner cartilage cup. Whilst many children undergo surgery at an early age, it is now very common for adults to seek treatment for protruding ears. Others come to us for earlobe surgery after heavy earrings have stretched the tissue. The decision to undergo surgery for protruding ears is entirely your own, and we will draw up a realistic treatment plan based on what is surgically possible.

Frequently asked questions about ear surgery

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding tummy tucks

Is it possible to have surgery for protruding ears for free as an adult (free surgery for protruding ears for adults)?

Many people wonder about options for having protruding ears corrected free of charge (through the county council). The county council sometimes covers the cost of ear surgery for children who suffer from very serious psychosocial problems (such as bullying) because of their ears. For people over the age of 18, ‘free protruding ear surgery for adults’ is, in principle, never granted within the public healthcare system, as it is regarded as a purely cosmetic procedure. These procedures are therefore paid for privately by the patient themselves.

What causes protruding ears?

The cause of protruding ears is usually hereditary (genetic). Anatomically speaking, this is either because the inner cartilage fold (antihelix) has not developed and folded during foetal development, or because the cartilage cup closest to the ear canal (concha) is unusually large or deep. This pushes the auricle outwards from the head. The aim of the surgery is to mechanically recreate this fold or reduce the depth of the concha.

Is ear surgery in Stockholm performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic?

This depends on the nature of the procedure and your personal preferences. Ear pinning is always performed under local anaesthetic. When it comes to a full ear operation involving cartilage reshaping, many adults prefer to have the procedure carried out under local anaesthetic combined with sedatives, whilst others prefer a general anaesthetic so they can sleep through the entire procedure. The surgeon will discuss this with you during the consultation.

Is it possible to simply stitch an earlobe back together (earlobe surgery / stitching an earlobe back together)?

Absolutely. One of the most common procedures carried out under local anaesthetic is stitching together earlobes that have been torn by a sudden tug or stretched by heavy jewellery or repeated stretching. Our price for stitching earlobes starts at 17,000 SEK, and often results in a very neat, healed scar, meaning that after a few months you can usually have new piercings done again.

How long do I need to wear a headband after surgery for protruding ears?

The weeks following the procedure are critical for the healing of the cartilage. Once the large dressing has been removed (after about 1 week), we recommend that you wear a snug-fitting headband around the clock for a further 1–2 weeks. After that, the headband should be worn at night for at least one month. This is to prevent the ear from accidentally folding forward against the pillow whilst you sleep, which could damage the internal sutures.

Will my scars be very noticeable after the procedure?

In ear correction surgery for protruding ears, the incision is strategically placed in the crease at the back of the ear, exactly where the ear meets the head. This ensures that the scars are completely invisible from the front and from the side. Initially, the scar is red, but over time it fades and often becomes very difficult to spot, even when looking behind the ear. In ear lobe surgery, small incisions are made on the front, which often heal exceptionally well.
