What is autologous fat transfer?

Fat grafting, or autologous fat transfer, involves transferring the body’s own living cells. It is a method that not only adds volume but can also improve skin texture thanks to the stem cells naturally present in adipose tissue. As the material is your own, there is no risk of allergic reactions to the preparation, making it a natural option for long-term volume restoration.

Our fat transfer techniques

We use advanced surgical techniques to ensure that fat cells are handled as gently as possible, which is crucial for a long-lasting result. Your surgeon will tailor the approach to the specific area being treated.

Fat grafting under the eyes

Fat grafting is a scientifically proven method for addressing volume loss under the eyes or reducing the appearance of drooping eyelids. By gently depositing microfat into the tissue, a balanced volume is restored, which can be effectively combined with finely filtered nanofat to simultaneously improve skin quality and stimulate cell renewal. This results in a smoother surface texture and proportions that harmonise with the rest of your face. Each step is individually tailored to your anatomical conditions to ensure the highest level of medical safety.

Facial lipofilling

When treating the cheeks or chin, fat is harvested (often from the abdomen or thighs), purified and injected in small amounts into various layers of tissue. This creates a natural fullness and can also have a positive effect on the overall quality of the skin.

Combined procedures

For those who wish to add volume to other parts of the body, we also offer lipofilling for the breasts, a procedure in which the patient’s own fat is used to give the breasts a natural increase in volume or to correct asymmetries.

Gentle approach

Whether the aim is fat grafting under the eyes or a more extensive volume enhancement, our surgeons employ refined techniques that minimise tissue trauma. By using very fine needles or micro-needles for the injection, we work with the utmost care. A precise approach is absolutely crucial to reducing bleeding, minimising swelling and ensuring that the fat is integrated into exactly the right layer of tissue for a smooth and permanent result.

The Evolution of You

Fat grafting
Step by step

We have a clear and reliable process, from your first visit right through to your final check-up, to ensure you feel fully prepared.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with your plastic surgeon for a medical assessment. We will plan where the fat will be harvested from and carefully mark the areas of the face that are to be augmented.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

You will be given clear instructions ahead of the day of your operation, including a ban on smoking and avoiding certain medicines. The evening before and on the morning of the operation, you should shower using antibacterial soap.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

The procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthetic for your comfort. First, a gentle liposuction is performed at the donor site. The fat is then centrifuged and purified before the surgeon injects the healthy fat cells into the face using fine needles.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up in our recovery room. It is normal to experience swelling and bruising, both at the site where the fat was harvested and where it was injected. You will be given pain relief as needed and can usually go home the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Rest is important during the first few weeks. You should avoid pressing on the treated areas of your face to give the fat cells the best possible chance of establishing a new blood supply. Most people are ready to return to work after 1–2 weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We will schedule a follow-up appointment to check how the wound is healing after about a week. A final check-up will be carried out after approximately six months, when we will take photographs of the results and assess how the fat has settled.

Results of fat grafting

The results of a fat transfer develop gradually. During the first few weeks, the tissue is swollen, but once healing is complete after around six months, the fat has permanently taken root and is there to stay. It is generally expected that a significant proportion of the fat cells will survive in the long term. As it is your own living tissue, the result ages naturally with you and is affected by future weight changes.

Our specialists in fat grafting

At The Faculty, you will meet a hand-picked team of specialists in plastic surgery, several of whom are among the most experienced in Europe in advanced fat transfer techniques. Every procedure is performed by a surgeon with extensive expertise in both liposuction and aesthetic volume restoration, which forms the foundation of your medical safety. We combine technical precision with an eye for natural proportions to create a result that harmonises with your anatomy.

Who is eligible for the procedure?

To undergo the procedure, you must be over 18 years of age, in good general health and have sufficient body fat to allow the procedure to be carried out. During the consultation, a medical assessment of your physical condition will be carried out. Smoking significantly impairs blood circulation and thus the survival of fat cells; therefore, you must be completely smoke-free in the run-up to the operation.

Risks and complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. These include general surgical risks such as infection, bleeding or uneven healing. With fat grafting, there is also a risk that less fat than expected will survive, which may mean that a follow-up treatment is required. During your consultation, the surgeon will carefully go through all potential risks and explain how we at The Faculty take preventive measures to minimise them.

Other treatments

If you prefer a non-surgical approach, fillers or biostimulators (such as Sculptra) may be options for restoring volume. During your consultation, we will discuss the pros and cons of the various options so that you can make the decision that feels right for you.

Why consider a facial fat transfer?

Many patients come to us because they are looking for a long-term solution to restore lost facial volume. Unlike temporary fillers, fat grafting involves using the body’s own fat to provide support and definition. It is a personal choice that often involves smoothing out hollows under the eyes (fat grafting under the eyes), enhancing the cheekbones, or softening lines around the mouth and temples. We view every procedure as part of your personal development and offer an objective, medical assessment based on your specific goals.

Frequently asked questions about fat grafting

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers about fat grafting

How much does facial fat grafting cost?

The cost of a facial fat transfer is 33,500 SEK. This covers the entire process, from liposuction to facial injections.

How long do the results of fat grafting last?

Once the fat has fully settled (which takes around six months), the results are permanent. However, your face will continue to age naturally, and the fat cells will respond to any future changes in your weight.

Is it possible to perform fat grafting under the eyes?

Yes, it’s a very common area to treat. By using microfat and nanofat, we can smooth out hollows and improve the skin texture under the eyes in a very natural way.

Will it hurt after the procedure?

Most people experience tenderness and swelling in the treated areas, similar to a severe bruise. You will be given prescription pain relief to help you manage the first few days of recovery.

Is there a high risk of unevenness?

By using micro-cannulas and injecting small amounts of fat at a time, the risk of unevenness is minimised. The surgeon’s experience and technique are crucial to achieving a smooth and aesthetically pleasing result.

When will the final result be available?

Due to the initial swelling, it takes a while before the actual volume becomes apparent. After about six months, it is possible to assess how much of the fat has become permanent.

What happens if I lose weight afterwards?

The transplanted fat cells behave just like fat in the rest of the body. If you lose a significant amount of weight, the volume in the treated areas may also decrease.
