What are Ultherapy and ultrasound treatment?

Ultherapy is a brand and a method that uses micro-focused ultrasound (MFU-V) to tighten the skin from within. The energy passes through the top layer of skin without damaging it, creating small, controlled heat points deep within the tissue. This triggers the skin’s natural healing process and collagen production. At The Faculty, we primarily use the advanced Sofwave technology, which is based on the same scientific principle but offers a more modern and wider heat distribution for increased comfort and safety.

Our ultrasound treatment methods

We use market-leading, medically proven technology for skin rejuvenation. At The Faculty, we primarily use Sofwave, which is the next generation of ultrasound technology. It is based on the same deep-acting principles as traditional Ultherapy (focused ultrasound), but with a patented technology that delivers thermal energy even more evenly and gently to the tissue.

Sofwave (Modern ultrasound technology)

High-frequency ultrasound pulses heat the deeper layers of the skin under strict control. The process stimulates the body’s own production of collagen and elastin. The method is specifically designed to tighten the face, neck and jawline.

Gentle approach

A fundamental principle of our skin-tightening ultrasound treatment is a deep respect for the anatomy of the face. Our equipment features integrated cooling systems that actively protect the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) throughout the procedure. By delivering energy with precise accuracy deep into the tissue, unnecessary thermal impact on the skin’s surface is avoided. This methodical approach is absolutely crucial – it makes the treatment gentler, minimises recovery time and ensures that stimulation occurs in the underlying layers where it provides the greatest anatomical benefit for lasting firmness.

The Evolution of You

Ultrasound treatment
Step by step

We have a structured and reliable process, from your initial consultation right through to the final follow-up, so that you always know what to expect.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a skin specialist who will assess the condition and elasticity of your skin. Together, you will discuss which areas to focus on – such as the neck, face or jawline – and determine that ultrasound treatment is the best medical option for you.

Before your treatment

Preparations for safe treatment

The treatment requires very little preparation. However, we recommend that you stop using potent skincare products, such as retinol or strong acids, a few days before your appointment so that your skin is stable and unaffected when you come to see us.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

The area is thoroughly cleaned. Some people find the heat generated by the ultrasound intense, which is why we always apply an anaesthetic cream before we start. An ultrasound gel is then applied, and the machine’s handpiece is systematically moved across the skin to deliver the energy to exactly the right depth.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

You can resume your normal routine straight away. For the first few days, you should avoid strenuous physical exercise and saunas so as not to further irritate your skin. Use gentle skincare products and be extremely careful to use a high sun protection factor (SPF) when outdoors.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

As it takes time for the body to build up new collagen, we schedule a follow-up appointment for a final assessment and photographs after around three to six months. It is then that we can objectively assess the actual firming results.

Treatment outcomes

Skin tightening using modern ultrasound technology is a physiological process that relies entirely on the body’s own ability to produce new collagen. You may sometimes notice a slight firming effect immediately after the treatment, but the real and lasting skin tightening occurs deep within the tissue over time. The final result develops gradually and is most clearly visible after three to six months. As the effect is determined by your individual biology and skin quality, the outcome is always unique. Ultrasound provides a gentle and natural enhancement of the skin’s structure, but does not recreate the extensive tightening achieved by a surgical facelift. During your consultation, we will provide an honest and objective assessment of the results that are anatomically possible for you specifically.

Our specialists

At The Faculty in Stockholm, we have hand-picked a team of qualified nurses and skincare therapists with in-depth expertise in high-tech skincare. Handling powerful ultrasound energy requires a thorough understanding of the body’s tissue layers. It is this collective medical expertise that ensures your treatment is carried out with the utmost safety.

Who is eligible for ultrasound treatment?

The treatment is ideal for people who have started to experience mild to moderate skin laxity and are looking for a non-surgical alternative. During the consultation, your general health and skin elasticity will be assessed. If the skin has lost too much elasticity, or if there is an active infection in the area, the treatment is not recommended. For medical safety reasons, we never treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Risks and complications

All treatments that affect the tissue carry risks. The most common reactions are mild and completely temporary, such as redness, a tight sensation and slight swelling. Specific, but rare, risks include superficial thermal damage or a temporary effect on peripheral nerves, which may lead to short-term numbness. The surgeon or specialist will always provide detailed information about these risks and how we work systematically to avoid them.

Other treatments

In addition to ultrasound, The Faculty offers a comprehensive range of treatments. Depending on your skin’s needs, advanced skin-sculpting treatments such as Profhilo or muscle-relaxing injections may be a suitable complement. For patients with significant loss of skin elasticity, a surgical face or neck lift may be the anatomically most appropriate step to achieve the desired result.

Why consider ultrasound treatment for skin tightening?

The motivation for seeking a non-surgical skin tightening treatment is entirely personal. Some patients wish to stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production to restore firmness to the jawline or neck. Others are looking for a method to give the face a gentle lift without having to undergo surgery. We do not judge your motives. Our primary goal is to use an objective and thorough skin analysis to design a realistic treatment plan that is fully tailored to your anatomical characteristics.

Frequently asked questions about ultrasound treatments

Frequently asked questions and answers about ultrasound treatments

How much does a treatment cost?

The cost depends on the area being treated. For the face and neck using our ultrasound technology, the price is 25,000 SEK. A full breakdown of costs is always provided during your consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

The experience is highly personal. Some people describe the ultrasound pulses as a deep, warming sensation, whilst others feel short, intense pricks. We always use a topical anaesthetic cream and sometimes painkillers to make the experience comfortable.

How long do the results last?

The new collagen produced by the body is permanent, resulting in a long-lasting lifting effect. However, the skin’s natural ageing process continues regardless of the method used. Many patients therefore choose to have a maintenance treatment after 12–18 months.

What is the difference between Ultherapy and Sofwave?

Both methods use ultrasound to stimulate collagen deep within the skin. Sofwave is a newer technology (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam) that delivers energy via multiple cylindrical zones in the middle layer of the skin. Many people find this modern technology gentler and faster, with very consistent anatomical results.

How soon do you see results from Ultherapy or similar ultrasound treatments?

As collagen production is an ongoing physiological process, the full results are usually visible after around three to six months.

When can I go back to work?

You can usually return to work straight away after the treatment. Your skin may be slightly red, but you generally won’t need to take time off work to recover.
