What are Powder Brows?

What exactly are powder brows in clinical terms? They are a modern form of semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing for the eyebrows. Instead of using a manual blade tool to carve in the hairs, the specialist uses a digital machine. This machine has an extremely fine needle that very quickly penetrates the skin’s surface and releases microscopic droplets (pixels) of colour pigment. The technique creates a soft shadow across the skin, similar to the effect of filling in the brows with eyebrow powder (powder ombre brows).

Our techniques for shaded eyebrows

In modern cosmetic tattooing, there are several techniques for applying colour. Our specialists use market-leading digital machines to create a dimensional, powdery finish.

Powder Brows

This technique involves the machine’s extremely fine needle applying thousands of microscopic dots of colour (pixels) to the skin. The result is similar to the appearance of eyebrows when they have been filled in with a soft eyebrow powder.

Ombre Brows / Ombre Powder Brows

This is a specific variation of the powder technique. Here, we create a colour gradient; the eyebrow is made very light and translucent at the front (at the bridge of the nose) and then gradually becomes darker and more defined towards the tail.

Gentle approach

A cornerstone of our business is an uncompromising respect for the skin’s various layers. Unlike older, deep-penetrating tattooing techniques, we work exclusively in the very top layer of the dermis (upper dermis). The digital machine we use is extremely gentle on the tissue and causes minimal trauma compared to manual incisions. This methodical approach prevents the ink from spreading uncontrollably beneath the skin, minimises bleeding and ensures that your pigment fades evenly and attractively over time.

Consultation prior to powder eyebrow tattooing

The process begins with a personal consultation at our clinic. We will examine your skin’s texture and discuss whether, for example, powder brows or microblading are best suited to your skin type. You will receive clear information about how the pigment behaves, the expected healing time and specific aftercare advice.

You will receive a personalised treatment plan tailored to your body.

The Evolution of You

Powder Brows
Step by step

We follow a rigorous clinical process from diagnosis to recovery, designed to maximise effectiveness and ensure your safety.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with your certified specialist for an analysis of your bone structure and skin condition. Using specialised measuring tools, we will sketch out a framework that balances your facial features. We select a pigment that harmonises with your skin’s undertone, and the design must always be approved by you before we proceed.

Before your treatment

Preparations for safe treatment

To minimise the risk of bleeding, which can cause the pigment to be forced out of the skin, you must not consume alcohol, coffee or blood-thinning medication (such as paracetamol or omega-3) for 24 hours beforehand. The skin on your eyebrows must also not be sunburnt or have recently been treated with strong acids.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

The area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. To make the procedure as comfortable as possible, we usually apply a topical anaesthetic cream to the eyebrows a short while before the machine starts working.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The initial healing process usually takes 7 to 14 days (powder brows healing). The brows will darken, feel stiff and will then start to flake. Your aftercare is crucial: you must keep the area dry initially, and strictly avoid sweaty exercise, chlorinated swimming pools, sunbathing and applying make-up to the brows until all the scabs have fallen off naturally.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

It is physiologically normal for the skin to shed up to 50 per cent of the colour during the first month. That is why a follow-up appointment is always scheduled for around 4–8 weeks later. At that point, we assess how the skin has taken to the colour, fill in any gaps and adjust the tone to achieve a complete result.

Results of Powder Brows

Building up the shading with pigment is a process. Your brows will look very dark and blocky for the first few days, before flaking off. Healed powder brows are significantly softer, lighter and have that translucent, powdery effect. The result is semi-permanent and will be broken down naturally by the body. Most people find that the colour lasts beautifully for between one and three years before a touch-up is recommended.

Our specialists

When you receive treatment at The Faculty, you are looked after by specialists with rigorous training in cosmetic tattooing and colour chemistry. Creating the perfect shade over the underlying musculature of the eyebrow requires in-depth anatomical understanding and a well-developed aesthetic eye. This collective medical expertise ensures that your procedure is carried out with the utmost safety.

Who can have an eyebrow tattoo?

These methods are intended for healthy individuals over the age of 18. A major advantage of the technique is that it is suitable for virtually all skin types. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, we almost always recommend the powder technique over the hairline technique, as oily skin tends to cause fine hairs to spread out and become blurred. We do not perform the treatment on patients with active eczema on the eyebrows, a tendency to develop severe keloid scars, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Risks and complications

Whenever we breach the skin barrier, there are always certain risks involved. Physiologically normal reactions include temporary redness, mild swelling and noticeable itching during the healing phase. If the aftercare hygiene guidelines are not followed at home, there is a risk of bacterial infections. Our clinical methods and sterile disposable instruments are strictly designed to prevent infections and ensure complication-free healing.

Other treatments

Eyebrow shading often gives the facial structure a fantastic lift, but sometimes our patients prefer a more holistic solution. If the asymmetry in your eyebrows is due to overactive forehead muscles, muscle-relaxing injections can often be a medically sensible first step before we tattoo the shape. If you’d also like a soft definition of your lips, our Lip Blush treatment is a very popular complement to harmonise the whole face.

Why consider cosmetic tattooing using the shading technique?

Choosing to have your eyebrows pigmented is a personal decision. Many patients opt for shading techniques specifically to restore a defined shape to eyebrows that have thinned over the years, or to visually balance out asymmetrical facial features. Others simply seek a smoother daily routine where their brows are already softly filled in from morning to night. We do not judge your reasons. Our task is to design a treatment plan, through a careful, objective analysis of your bone structure and skin tone, that maximises your anatomical features in a natural-looking way.

Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions about Powder Brows and Healing

Frequently Asked Questions about Powder Brows and Healing

What’s the difference between powder brows and microblading? (microblading vs powder brows)

This is by far the most common question (powder brows or microblading). Microblading uses a hand-held tool to etch manual lines into the skin that look like individual hairs. Powder brows use a machine to apply pigment in tiny dots, creating a shaded, filled-in effect. The powder technique is generally gentler on the skin and results in less scarring over time.

Why should I choose ombre brows over microblading?

Ombre brows are an advanced shading technique. If you want a result that looks professionally made up, with a very light and soft front edge that transitions into a sharper tail, ombre brows are the right choice. Microblading (microblading powder brows) is suitable for those who simply want the illusion of natural, sparse hairs.

How does the healing process for powder brows work?

The typical healing process for powder brows takes around 14 days. In the first few days, the colour looks very dense and unnaturally dark. Between days four and seven, the brows start to dry out and flake (like dandruff). It is an extremely important medical requirement that you do not scratch off these flakes, as you will be removing the pigment. Once the flakes have fallen off, the colour often looks far too light, before it stabilises during weeks three and four.

What do healed powder brows look like compared to freshly done ones?

Freshly treated eyebrows are very prominent, with sharp edges and a dark colour, due to the pigment sitting on the surface of the skin alongside mild inflammation. Healed powder brows are around 30 to 50 per cent lighter. The edges shrink slightly, becoming blurrier, and the skin that has healed over the pigment gives the entire brow a very soft, matte and transparent powder effect.

Does getting a tattoo with a machine hurt more than with a hand-held tool?

The experience of pain varies from person to person, but the vast majority of patients find that the machine technique (powder) is significantly less painful than the manual stroke technique (microblading). The machine’s needle works so quickly and superficially that it usually feels like nothing more than a vibrating tickle or a light scraping sensation, especially once the numbing cream has taken effect.

Is the contouring technique better suited to my oily skin type than other methods?

Yes, absolutely. If you have oily skin with high sebum production, the powder brow technique is almost always the only option we recommend. This is because microbladed hairs on oily skin have a strong physiological tendency to expand, smudge and become blurred over time. Machine shading retains its powdery finish much better.

How long does the treatment at the clinic take, and will I need to take time off work?

You won’t need to take any time off work at all, as there is no recovery period that would physically prevent you from working. The visit to the clinic itself takes between 2 and 2.5 hours, with most of that time spent on carefully measuring your shape, discussing colour, and administering anaesthesia. The actual procedure often takes less than an hour.
