What is gynaecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the medical term for a benign enlargement of male breast tissue. The condition can be caused by an increase in firm glandular tissue (true gynaecomastia), an accumulation of fatty tissue (sometimes called lipomastia), or a combination of both. Surgery aims to reduce this volume and create a flatter contour across the chest. We determine the main type of tissue involved during your clinical examination.

Our approaches to gynaecomastia

We use gentle, scientifically proven surgical techniques to ensure the highest level of patient safety. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess whether liposuction, surgical removal or a combination of both is best suited to your anatomical characteristics.

Removal of the mammary gland

If you have a swollen breast gland, a discreet crescent-shaped incision is made at the lower edge of the areola. The firm glandular tissue is then permanently removed through this incision.

Liposuction

If the bulk of the volume consists of fat (lipomastia), microcannulas are inserted through small incisions to gently suction out the fat cells and flatten the chest.

Combined procedures

Liposuction and surgical removal of the gland are often performed during the same operation to create a smooth and natural transition to the surrounding chest muscle.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our plastic surgeons employ refined techniques that minimise tissue trauma. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling. This promotes safer healing and is absolutely essential for ensuring that scars are as discreet as possible.

Consultation before your operation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Gynecomastia surgery
Step by step

We want you to have a full understanding of the process. Here, we outline our secure procedure for your treatment, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a plastic surgery specialist for a thorough examination of your anatomy. Together, you will discuss whether liposuction, gland removal or a hybrid approach is the safest and most effective option for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have given your consent, our coordinator will take over. You will receive clear written instructions to abstain from tobacco and alcohol well in advance, as well as guidelines on showering with antibacterial soap and fasting prior to the day of the operation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, you will change into a hospital gown and meet your surgeon to mark the surgical site. You will also meet your anaesthetist. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually takes between one and two hours.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be closely monitored in our recovery room. It is completely normal for the area to be swollen and tender at first. We will ensure you receive the appropriate pain relief before you can go home to rest, usually later the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Initially, you will wear a custom-made compression vest around the clock to aid healing and minimise swelling. You should avoid strenuous exercise for around four weeks, but gentle walks are encouraged.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

About a week after your procedure, you will see one of our nurses for an initial wound check. A final follow-up appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled six months later to take photographs and assess the final result.

Results following gynecomastia surgery

The recovery process following gynaecomastia surgery varies slightly depending on whether we have performed liposuction alone or have also surgically removed the breast tissue. During the first few weeks, the chest is swollen and bruising often occurs. The skin may initially feel tight and sometimes slightly uneven during the healing process, but the tissue gradually relaxes and adapts to the restored, flatter contour. The final anatomical result of the gynaecomastia surgery is only medically assessed after six to twelve months, once all internal swelling has completely subsided and the scars have faded.

Our specialists in body contouring

At The Faculty, hand-picked plastic surgeons with cutting-edge expertise in upper body and back surgery work. Sculpting the contours of the back and managing long surgical incisions place extreme demands on the surgeon’s technical skill and sense of symmetry to ensure optimal wound healing. This is the foundation of your medical safety and a lasting result.

Who is eligible for the procedure?

To undergo cosmetic surgery, you must be at least 18 years old and in very good general health. A thorough medical assessment is carried out during the consultation. Certain medications, such as anabolic steroids, are a known cause of gynaecomastia and must be discontinued. Giving up smoking is a non-negotiable requirement, as nicotine restricts blood circulation and dramatically increases the risk of poor healing of surgical wounds.

Complications and risks

All surgical procedures carry risks, such as bleeding, infection or asymmetrical healing. With gynaecomastia surgery in Sweden, there is a small risk of loss of sensation in the nipple, which is usually temporary, as well as a risk of minor unevenness under the skin. To minimise the risk of bleeding (haematoma), it is extremely important that you wear the compression vest exactly as instructed by the surgeon.

Other procedures in cosmetic surgery

For patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, simply removing the gland is sometimes not enough; if the skin is severely sagging, a chest lift may be required. Gynecomastia is also often combined with liposuction of the abdomen or flanks (love handles) to create a fully balanced and toned upper body.

Why have gynaecomastia surgery?

The reasons for coming to us for male breast reduction are highly personal. Many men experience a volume over the chest with which they are not satisfied, often caused by increased glandular tissue or fat, which in medical terms is called gynaecomastia. Wanting to change one’s anatomy is a personal choice. Many patients tell us that their motivation is a desire to feel more comfortable in their own bodies, whether it’s about wearing certain clothes or engaging in physical activity. We listen to your story and create a plan based on your physique.

Frequently asked questions about gynaecomastia

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about gynaecomastia

What is gynaecological cancer and what causes it?

Questions such as ‘What is gynaecomastia?’ are common. Gynaecomastia is a benign enlargement of the mammary gland in men (male breasts). It is usually caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen, often during puberty, but can also be triggered by medication or ageing. If the enlargement is solely due to localised fat, it is instead called lipomastia.

Can I have gynaecomastia surgery for free?

We are often asked about free gynaecomastia surgery (funded by the local health authority). The National Health Service rarely covers the cost of this surgery, except in very extreme cases where breast development causes significant, documented physical pain and has a major impact on daily life. Purely cosmetic procedures to remove small breasts are paid for by the patient themselves at a private clinic.

What is the typical cost of gynaecomastia surgery in Sweden?

The price for a gynaecomastia operation starts at 35,000 SEK if the procedure only requires liposuction, and at 45,000 SEK if we also need to surgically remove the mammary gland. Looking for the absolute cheapest gynaecomastia surgery can involve medical risks; our prices reflect the safety of hospital-grade facilities and the surgeon’s expertise.

Is the lump on my chest gynaecomastia or male breast cancer?

Many people who discover a small lump in their breast or tender nipples worry about male breast cancer. Gynaecomastia usually feels like a soft, central lump. A malignant tumour in the breast gland, on the other hand, is often a hard lump in the breast that is fixed to the underlying tissue. At the slightest suspicion, or if you have a sore on your chest, you must contact your GP immediately for an investigation. We only operate on confirmed benign gynaecomastia.

Is it possible to get rid of man boobs through exercise?

No, it is physiologically impossible to exercise away man boobs if they are caused by genuine gynaecomastia, as you cannot spot-reduce or exercise away mammary gland tissue. However, if the volume consists primarily of fat (lipomastia), general weight loss and muscle building can reduce the size, but stubborn, localised fat deposits often remain, requiring surgery.

When can I start exercising after a gynaecomastia operation?

To achieve a good result from your gynaecomastia surgery, you must allow your body time to heal. You can go for brisk walks after a week, but exercising after gynaecomastia surgery—including heavy lifting or chest exercises—is strictly prohibited for four to six weeks. Overexerting your muscles after gynecomastia surgery can lead to severe internal bleeding and wide scarring.

Why have surgery in Sweden rather than undergoing gynecomastia surgery in Turkey?

Many people compare the cost of gynaecomastia surgery in Turkey with that in Sweden. With cosmetic surgery, there is a real risk of haematoma (bleeding) and asymmetry. Having your operation at The Faculty gives you the peace of mind of Swedish patient insurance and immediate access to your plastic surgeon throughout the entire healing process – an invaluable medical safeguard.
