What does treatment for frown lines and forehead wrinkles with botulinum toxin involve?

The forehead and the area between the eyebrows (the glabella) are controlled by strong and active facial muscles. As we age, the skin’s natural elasticity decreases, causing temporary expression lines to gradually develop into permanent wrinkles on the forehead. Medical treatment in this area usually involves injections of botulinum toxin. This is a muscle-relaxing medication that locally blocks nerve signals to the specific muscle. It allows the overlying skin to relax and smooths out deep creases, entirely without surgical intervention.

Our methods for botulinum toxin and fillers

To achieve a genuine, sustainable and medically safe result in this sensitive area, the demands placed on materials and technology are extremely high.

Muscle relaxant injections

Injecting botulinum toxin into the forehead effectively reduces muscle activity. Treating both the forehead and the glabellar lines with botulinum toxin at the same time is standard clinical practice. This creates a harmonious and proportionate result and prevents other muscles from compensating.

Volume enhancement with fillers

If the wrinkles have formed a deep, static crease on the forehead that is visible even when the face is completely relaxed, we can supplement the treatment with hyaluronic acid. A filler in a forehead wrinkle or frown line acts as a structural support that literally lifts the crease from within.

Anatomical knowledge and gentle techniques

The area around the forehead has a complex network of blood vessels. Our specialists have an in-depth understanding of anatomy, which is absolutely essential for gentle and safe treatment.

A clinic full of expertise

Treating the area around the eyes and forehead places extremely high demands on the treating specialist’s anatomical knowledge. The forehead has a complex network of blood vessels, and our specialists have an in-depth understanding of these structures.

Price of botulinum toxin for the forehead

Before a procedure, the cost of botulinum toxin injections for the forehead and frown lines is often a key concern for our patients. The exact cost is always determined during your personal consultation, as it depends on how many areas of your facial muscles require treatment.

Pre-treatment consultation

The first step is a detailed consultation with one of our qualified specialists. We assess your muscle strength (when you are asked to frown) and the elasticity of your skin. You will receive clinical information about the risks of botulinum toxin in the forehead, expected results and aftercare.

After the consultation, you have a statutory cooling-off period of at least 48 hours (which applies to aesthetic injection treatments) to allow you to decide in your own time whether you wish to give your consent.

Botulinum toxin in the forehead
Step by step

To ensure you feel completely at ease and know exactly what to expect, we have a strict and safe procedure in place for our botulinum toxin treatments

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

Your practitioner will carry out a thorough clinical assessment of your muscle activity around the forehead and glabella. We will go through your health declaration and discuss your expectations.

Preparations

Preparations for safe treatment

Preparation on the day of treatment: The skin is cleansed and disinfected extremely thoroughly with chlorhexidine to ensure a sterile working area. We identify specific injection points (botulinum toxin forehead points) that are fully tailored to your unique facial expressions.

The treatment

Safe care at the clinic

In botulinum toxin treatment, a microscopically thin needle is used to inject small, precise doses directly into the muscle. The treatment takes around 15 minutes. In filler treatment, a blunt cannula is often used deep beneath the skin.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Avoid touching the injection sites with unwashed hands, do not wear make-up for 12 hours, and refrain from strenuous exercise, sauna sessions and exposure to extreme cold for the first 48 hours to minimise the risk of swelling. It is particularly important not to massage your forehead and not to lie flat for the first 4 hours after the injection to prevent the substance from spreading.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We always offer a voluntary follow-up appointment after 14 days to ensure that your muscles have responded symmetrically and that you are happy with the results.

Results following treatment

When using muscle relaxants (botulinum toxin in the forehead), it normally takes between 4 and 10 days for the nerve signals to be blocked and for the effect to become visible. The final result is assessed after 14 days. If you are treated with hyaluronic acid (fillers in the forehead), the increase in volume and smoothing of the wrinkle are visible immediately, although some swelling is normal initially. The clinical duration is usually 3 to 4 months for muscle relaxants, whilst fillers can last for up to 12 months.

Our specialists in injections

Treating the forehead is complex because the frontalis muscle is the only muscle that raises the eyebrows. Many patients who visit us have had a botulinum toxin treatment on their forehead that went wrong, usually administered by unqualified practitioners. At The Faculty, we minimise these risks with the utmost rigour. We are treated exclusively by qualified doctors and injection nurses who understand exactly how the muscles interact, and we always use conservative dosing to preserve the face’s natural expressions and avoid a heavy feeling.

Who can undergo the treatment?

To undergo medical injection treatments, you must be over 18 years of age, in good health and generally well. We do not treat women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The ideal candidate is someone who is experiencing a loss of volume, has prominent blood vessels or very thin skin on their hands. Prior to treatment, we will assess your medical history to rule out any autoimmune diseases or active skin infections that could affect the procedure.

Complications and risks

Injecting fillers into the forehead carries specific medical risks due to the complex blood supply in this area. Common and temporary side effects include localised swelling, redness and minor bruising around the injection sites. A rare but serious risk associated with injection treatments in the upper face is vascular occlusion, which means that the product blocks a blood vessel. During your consultation, our qualified practitioners will carefully review all potential side effects and explain how we minimise these through in-depth anatomical expertise and strict safety protocols.

Other treatments

In addition to forehead fillers, we at The Faculty offer other proven injection treatments to address facial lines. To reduce dynamic forehead wrinkles or a prominent frown line, muscle relaxants, known as botulinum toxin, are often the primary option. During your consultation, a clinical assessment of your muscle activity will be carried out to determine whether botulinum toxin, fillers or a combination of methods is medically the most suitable option for your anatomical conditions.

Why consider forehead injections?

The motivation for wanting to reduce forehead lines is highly personal. Often, it is because repeated movements over time have created what is known as a frown line, or deeper horizontal creases that are visible even when the face is at rest. Many people come to us because they want to get rid of a frown line, as it can make the face look tense, even when you feel well-rested. We always take your personal reasons into account and tailor a plan entirely to your anatomy, with a focus on preserving your natural features.

Frequently asked questions about forehead fillers

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about forehead wrinkles

How long does a muscle-relaxing treatment on the forehead last?

The duration varies from person to person, but the muscle-relaxing effect generally lasts between 3 and 5 months. The body then breaks down the substance naturally.

When will the results of the treatment be visible?

The very first signs that the muscles are beginning to relax become apparent after 3 to 5 days. The full results can only be assessed after two weeks.

Can you use a frown line patch instead?

A wrinkle patch may provide a very short-lived, temporary lifting effect overnight, but it cannot be compared to a medical procedure that treats the root cause – the muscle activity beneath the skin.

How can I avoid a heavy forehead after the treatment?

By consulting an anatomically knowledgeable and qualified practitioner who adjusts the dosage and selects the correct points, the risk of heavy eyebrows or drooping eyelids is drastically reduced.

Can fillers be used for forehead wrinkles?

Yes. If the wrinkles are deep and static (visible when the muscle is relaxed), a filler may be needed to fill out the skin fold from within and create a smoother surface. Sometimes both techniques are combined.

Is it common to have a manicure?

It is a very common and popular treatment, but often receives less attention than facials. Many people place great importance on looking after their face, only to realise later that their hands (wrinkled hands) do not match the rejuvenated appearance of their face.

Can you massage your hands yourself after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, your injection specialist will massage your hands to ensure the product is distributed evenly. We recommend that you avoid pressing or massaging the area firmly yourself for the first few days, to allow the filler to settle exactly where it has been medically administered.
