What does a breast lift involve?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to lift and reshape the breasts when the skin has lost its natural elasticity. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon removes excess skin, repositions the underlying breast tissue and moves the nipple to a higher, more anatomically balanced position. Depending on your body type, the operation is performed either as a breast lift without implants to preserve your natural volume, or in combination with an implant if you also wish to increase fullness.

Our breast lift techniques

At The Faculty, we use surgical techniques based on scientific evidence. How does a breast lift work in practice? The choice of method is carefully tailored to the degree of skin laxity, the anatomy of your chest, and your preferences regarding volume.

Breast lift without implants (natural breast lift)

This is the most common method when you have sufficient breast tissue but would like a firmer shape. The plastic surgeon removes excess skin and lifts your existing tissue and nipple to a higher position.

Breast lift with implants

Breast augmentation combined with a breast lift is recommended if, in addition to needing a lift, the breasts also lack volume. By combining these procedures, both firmness and fullness are restored.

Scars from a breast lift

Depending on how much skin needs to be removed, the incisions are positioned differently. The most common techniques involve an incision around the areola and straight down (lollipop scar), or a combined incision that also runs along the breast crease (anchor scar).

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our plastic surgeons use refined techniques that minimise trauma to the delicate tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring that your scars after a breast lift are as discreet as possible.

The Evolution of You

Breast lift
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of what a breast lift with us involves.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We will assess your anatomical conditions and discuss whether a lift with or without implants is the right course of action for you./p>

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have given your consent, the operation will be booked. It is essential that you do not smoke for four weeks before and after the operation, as nicotine impairs blood circulation and wound healing.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the clinic. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually takes 2–3 hours. The plastic surgeon removes excess skin, repositions the nipple and carefully closes the incision.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest comfortably in our monitored recovery ward. Your breasts will initially feel tight and swollen. Depending on the extent of the procedure, some patients may go home the same day, whilst others will stay overnight.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

For the first few weeks, you should wear a recovery bra (support bra) around the clock. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks so as not to disrupt the healing process.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We schedule regular check-ups with our nurses to change the dressings and monitor the healing of the scar. After about six months, we’ll meet for a final check-up with your plastic surgeon.

Results of a breast lift

The final result of your procedure will always be specific to your individual anatomy. Immediately after the operation, the breasts are often positioned high up and feel tight, sometimes with a slightly overcorrected shape. This is completely normal. As the swelling subsides and the tissue relaxes over the first few months, your breasts will settle into their natural, permanent position. A surgical skin lift does not slow down the body’s natural ageing process, but it does provide a lasting lift. The final medical outcome – including how well your breast lift scars have faded – will be assessed together with your plastic surgeon after approximately six to twelve months.

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for a breast lift?

To undergo cosmetic surgery with us, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general health. A thorough medical assessment will be carried out during your consultation. The elasticity of your skin and the density of your tissue play a major role in the choice of procedure. If you have recently been pregnant, we recommend that you wait at least six months after you have finished breastfeeding before planning an operation. The requirement to stop smoking is non-negotiable for all breast surgery.

Complications and risks

All surgical procedures carry medical risks. Common complications include bleeding, infection or asymmetrical healing. Specifically with breast lifts, there is a risk of wide scarring or temporary to permanent loss of sensation in the nipple. If the procedure is combined with implants, there are specific risks such as capsular contracture. Your surgeon will provide you with detailed information about these risks and our safety procedures during your consultation.

Other procedures in cosmetic surgery

Many patients who seek a breast lift following pregnancy or significant weight loss also wish to address excess skin on the abdomen. It is therefore very common to discuss a tummy tuck and a breast lift at the same time (often referred to as a ‘Mummy Makeover’). If it is deemed medically safe for your particular body, these procedures can sometimes be performed during the same operation.

Why consider a breast lift?

It is a natural physiological process for breast tissue to change over time. Following pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss, the skin often loses its elasticity, which can cause the bust to lose its shape and firmness. The desire to restore a firmer contour is a highly personal decision based on your own body image. The motivation to seek plastic surgery is individual, and we listen carefully to your reasons so that we can design a realistic, medically sound treatment plan that is fully tailored to your anatomical conditions.

Frequently asked questions about breast lifts

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding breast lifts

Are there any methods for a breast lift that don’t involve surgery, threads or lasers?

Many patients search for "thread lift for the breasts", "non-surgical breast lift" or "laser breast lift". Although certain non-surgical devices and thread lifts may provide a marginal tightening of the skin on the body, they can never remove actual excess skin or lift heavy breast tissue. For a lasting and anatomically meaningful result, a surgical breast lift is the only medically reliable option.

What will my scars look like after a breast lift?

The location of the scars depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. A classic anchor scar runs around the areola, straight down to the breast crease and along the crease beneath the breast. Initially, the scars are red and visible, but with the right taping and aftercare, they usually fade significantly and become very discreet over time (often 6–12 months).

How long is the sick leave period following a breast lift?

The length of your sick leave depends on your job. If you have a sedentary office job, you can usually return to work after one to two weeks. If you have a physically demanding job involving heavy lifting, you will usually need to be on sick leave for three to four weeks.

Can you breastfeed after a breast lift?

There is always a risk that the ability to breastfeed may be affected following a breast lift, as the milk ducts and nerves around the nipple may be partially severed during the operation. Although many women are able to breastfeed without any problems afterwards, we can never guarantee that the ability to breastfeed will remain completely intact.

When can I start exercising after a breast lift?

Gentle walks are beneficial even during the first week to keep the blood circulating. However, exercise that raises the heart rate, gym workouts and activities that engage the chest muscles must be avoided completely for at least four to six weeks to allow the tissue and scar tissue to heal properly.

When can I go sunbathing after a breast lift?

You should not expose your scars to direct sunlight (or sunbeds) during the first year, or for as long as the scars are still red or pink. Sunbathing on fresh scars can lead to permanent pigmentation and make them darker. Always wear clothing that covers the area or use surgical tape to protect it.

Does sensation in the nipples change after a breast lift?

As the surgeon repositions the nipple and areola to a new, anatomically balanced position during the procedure, it is very common to experience a temporary change in sensation. Some patients feel a certain numbness, whilst others may experience hypersensitivity during the initial healing phase. For the vast majority, sensation gradually returns to normal within six to twelve months as the fine nerve fibres recover. In rare cases, however, some loss of sensation may be permanent, which is one of the medical risks we always inform you about openly prior to your operation.
