What does lip augmentation with fillers involve?

Lip augmentation using fillers is a minimally invasive injection treatment in which a sterile, crystal-clear gel consisting of synthetic hyaluronic acid is injected into the lip tissue. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar compound that occurs naturally in your body and has a unique ability to bind water. The results are immediately visible in the form of increased moisture, defined contours and soft volume.

Our methods for lip fillers

To achieve a natural, long-lasting and anatomically balanced result, our injection specialists and doctors work exclusively with the market’s leading and most well-documented hyaluronic acid fillers.

Natural lip enhancement

One of the most common requests is for natural-looking lip augmentation that blends seamlessly with the existing proportions of the face. By using well-documented, hyaluronic acid-based fillers, we can add moisture and a subtle volume that respects and complements your original features.

1 ml lip filler vs 0.5 ml lip filler

The exact amount of product is always tailored to the individual. Using 0.5 ml of lip filler provides a very subtle plumping effect and is a common choice for those seeking a discreet change. A treatment with 1 ml of lip filler gives the practitioner scope to build a more pronounced base volume and work more precisely on the contours of the lips.

Lip filler techniques and methods

As every mouth is unique, we use advanced techniques to meet different anatomical requirements. Whether the aim is to accentuate the Cupid’s bow, create balance between the upper and lower lips, or work with specific shapes (known as lip filler shapes), the material is placed with the utmost precision to harmonise with your face.

Lip flip vs fillers

There is a significant difference between these two methods. Whilst a filler treatment adds physical volume to the tissue, a lip flip involves injecting a very small amount of a muscle-relaxing agent just above the upper lip. This causes the muscle to relax, so that the lip line gently rotates outwards, creating an illusion of fullness without any actual volume material being added.

Lip augmentation without fillers

For patients seeking a longer-lasting or permanent alternative, our plastic surgeons offer treatments that do not involve hyaluronic acid. This may include a surgical lip lift, where the skin distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip is shortened to reveal more of the lip’s natural colour, or a fat transfer (lipofilling) where your own body fat is used to gently build up the tissue.

Pre-treatment consultation

The first step is a consultation with one of our injection specialists. You can choose whether to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the consultation, you will receive medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best suited to you.

You will be given a specific treatment proposal tailored to your body. After the consultation, you have a statutory cooling-off period of at least 48 hours to decide, at your leisure, whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Lip augmentation
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how our lip augmentation procedure works, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We will assess your anatomy and blood vessels and discuss the volume (e.g. 0.5 or 1 ml).

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Your lips will be thoroughly cleaned. We will apply a strong, medical-grade numbing cream to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible. The filler itself usually also contains a numbing agent (lidocaine).

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

It is normal for your lips to be swollen and tender, and for bruising to appear. Avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths and wearing make-up on your lips for the first 24 hours.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

The final result is assessed after around two weeks, once any swelling has subsided and the filler has been absorbed into the tissue.

Results following lip augmentation

The results of lip filler injections are visible immediately, but it is important to understand the body’s natural healing process over the following days. Immediately after the treatment, and particularly the day after lip augmentation, it is perfectly normal for the lips to be asymmetrically swollen, feel tender and for bruising to occur. This initial swelling makes the lips look temporarily larger and tighter than the actual result will be.

Our specialists in injections

At The Faculty, all injection treatments are performed exclusively by qualified doctors or qualified and certified injection nurses. Injecting the lips requires extreme precision down to the millimetre and an understanding of three-dimensional form, which our practitioners have acquired through extensive clinical experience.

Who is eligible for the procedure?

To receive filler treatments with us, you must be aged 18 or over. We do not treat people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. During the consultation, we carry out a thorough health assessment, during which we discuss any allergies and medications (particularly blood-thinning medication, which can increase the risk of bruising).

Complications and risks

As with all injections, there are medical risks. Common, temporary side effects include swelling and bruising. One specific complication that many people worry about is lip filler migration, which means that the product moves outside the lip line. This is usually due to over-treatment, incorrect technique or anatomical factors. At The Faculty, we use specific techniques and the correct amount of product to strictly prevent this. In very rare cases, the filler may affect a blood vessel, which our experts are trained to treat immediately with hyalase (an enzyme that breaks down the filler).

Other treatments and cosmetics

Many patients ask us about popular at-home cosmetic products known as ‘fillers’, such as Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX lip filler, Peter Thomas Roth lip filler, Exuviance lip filler, Exuviance targeted lip filler, or general searches for lip-plumping lip gloss. These skincare products often contain ingredients that temporarily irritate the lips (e.g. peppermint) or bind moisture to the surface, causing short-lived swelling. They provide a nice shine, but they can never replace the anatomical shaping and long-lasting volume achieved with a medical injection treatment at a clinic.

Why consider lip augmentation?

As we age, the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen decreases, which often leads to the lips losing their firmness, moisture and volume. Others come to us to correct a congenital asymmetry, or simply because they want a more defined Cupid’s bow. The motivation behind booking a lip injection is entirely personal. We listen carefully to your reasons and design a medically sound treatment plan that is tailored entirely to your facial anatomy and physiological conditions.

Frequently asked questions about lip augmentation

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about lip augmentation

How long do lip fillers last?

The duration varies depending on your metabolism, age and the type of filler used. Generally, lip augmentation lasts for 6 to 12 months. The lips have a high blood supply and are highly mobile, which means that the filler breaks down more quickly here than in other parts of the face.

Is it possible to have permanent lip augmentation?

We work exclusively with biodegradable hyaluronic acid fillers (not permanent), as the face ages and changes over time. Permanent fillers carry significant medical risks and complications. A more permanent surgical solution is a lip lift or fat transfer (natural lip augmentation using the body’s own fat).

What should you do if your lip augmentation has gone wrong?

If you have had treatment at another clinic and are experiencing asymmetry, lumps or a displaced lip filler, our specialists can help you. Hyaluronic acid can be safely and effectively dissolved using the licensed medication Hyalase. Afterwards, the lips can be rebuilt from scratch after approximately two weeks.

Can you recreate a celebrity’s lips, for example, a Millie Bobby Brown lip filler or a Bianca Ingrosso lip filler?

We often see reference photos of celebrities during consultations, which is a great way to show us what ‘style’ (lip filler shapes) you like. However, our aim is never to copy someone else’s look. We always tailor the technique and volume to create the most harmonious version of your lips.

What do you look like the day after lip augmentation?

The day after the procedure, your lips are usually at their most swollen, and it is very common for the skin to feel tight and for you to have some bruising. This initial "excess volume" is completely normal and will gradually subside over the coming days.

What is the difference between a lip flip and fillers?

A lip flip involves injecting microdoses of a muscle relaxant into the muscle above the upper lip. This causes the lip to roll outwards and become more visible, particularly when you smile, but it does not actually add any volume. A filler is injected into the tissue itself to provide moisture, shape and physical volume.

Does the injection hurt?

The lips are a sensitive area, but we use a highly effective medical anaesthetic cream which is left to take effect before we begin. Furthermore, the filler itself contains a local anaesthetic, which means that the treatment is often perceived as much more comfortable than many patients expect.
