What does intimate surgery involve?

Female genital surgery is a collective term for aesthetic and functional surgical procedures in the genital area. The most common procedure is labia reduction (often referred to as labiaplasty), in which tissue is surgically removed to reduce the size of the inner labia. The decision to undergo genital surgery may also include procedures on the outer labia, or a tightening of the vaginal walls (vaginalplasty). During a consultation, a careful and thorough clinical analysis of your anatomy is carried out to determine exactly which method is best suited to alleviate your specific symptoms.

Our approaches to intimate surgery

To achieve a natural and long-lasting result, our surgeons always take your individual tissue structure into account. We use different techniques depending on whether you are undergoing inner or outer labia surgery or other intimate surgical procedures.

Labiaplasty

This procedure involves removing excess tissue from the inner labia to reduce their size and alleviate chafing. It is a precise procedure designed to preserve a natural shape.

Surgery on the outer labia

If the outer labia are enlarged or asymmetrical, we can surgically reshape them to improve comfort and restore a balanced appearance.

Fat grafting to the outer labia

If, on the other hand, the outer labia have lost their firmness and volume (for example, due to ageing or childbirth), fullness and protection can be restored using the patient’s own fat.

Liposuction of the mons pubis

A gentle method for reducing stubborn, localised fat deposits above the pubic bone (the mons pubis) that can cause chafing or discomfort when wearing tight-fitting clothes.

Vaginal tightening surgery (Vaginoplasty)

A surgical procedure to tighten the posterior vaginal wall and the pelvic floor muscles, which is often requested to restore function following childbirth-related injuries.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your individual circumstances, our plastic surgeons use surgical instruments that minimise trauma to the extremely sensitive mucous membrane and skin. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling. This promotes safer healing following your intimate surgery and ensures extremely discreet scars.

Consultation before your operation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Intimate surgery
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how labia reduction surgery is carried out at our clinic, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

The surgeon examines the structure and elasticity of the cartilage. We discuss whether the procedure should be performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

You will be given instructions on hygiene procedures and stopping smoking (at least 4 weeks before and after the operation). This is a non-negotiable requirement to ensure the safety of the operation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the clinic. A labia majora reduction procedure usually takes 1–2 hours and is generally performed under general anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest in the recovery room. The area where the operation was performed will be swollen. Most patients go home the same day with the recommended pain relief.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Keep a close eye on your recovery. Gently wash your genital area after using the toilet. Avoid tight clothing, heavy lifting, bathing, cycling and sexual intercourse for the first six weeks to protect the stitches.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A follow-up appointment to check the wound is usually scheduled just over a week later (the stitches are usually self-dissolving and do not need to be removed). A final check-up is booked six months later.

Results following labiaplasty

The results following surgery on the inner or outer labia are influenced by your original anatomy. Immediately after you have chosen to have labia reduction surgery, it is perfectly normal for the area to be swollen, feel tight and be tender. Initially, the mucous membrane may feel tight, but the tissue gradually relaxes and adapts to its final position. We monitor your healing process closely, and the final check-up following your labiaplasty usually takes place after 6 months, once all swelling from the intimate surgery has completely subsided.

Our specialists in intimate surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, where every reconstructive and cosmetic procedure is carried out by specialists with cutting-edge expertise, grounded in science and uncompromising perfection. Your safety and peace of mind are always our top priority.

Who is eligible for intimate surgery?

To book a cosmetic or functional procedure with us, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general health. During the consultation, a thorough assessment is carried out to ensure that the procedure is suitable. Some patients wonder whether it is possible to have surgery through the public healthcare system (intimate surgery via the county council). To have labiaplasty via the county council, you often need to have very severe, documented medical and functional problems. At a private clinic such as The Faculty, the patient pays for the procedure themselves with the aim of restoring function and alleviating everyday discomfort.

Complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks. General complications include bleeding, infection or asymmetry in the healing process. Specific risks associated with this particular procedure include temporary loss of sensation in the operated area during the initial healing phase, or hardening of the scar tissue. The risk of permanent loss of sensation is very small, but to minimise risks and avoid a failed operation, choosing an experienced specialist surgeon and a gentle technique is crucial to your medical safety.

Other treatments in the field of intimate surgery

Often, it is not just the inner labia that cause chafing or discomfort; rather, the anatomy of the intimate area interacts as a whole. For this reason, labia reduction is sometimes performed in combination with a clitoral hood reduction to create balanced proportions. In addition to labiaplasty, we also offer volume-enhancing treatments for the outer labia, liposuction of the mons pubis, and vaginoplasty for women seeking vaginal rejuvenation or experiencing reduced muscle function following childbirth. During your consultation, we will carefully examine exactly which anatomical structure is causing your specific concerns.

Why consider intimate surgery?

The reasons for seeking genital plastic surgery are entirely personal. Many women choose to have surgery on their labia majora to alleviate physical pain and chafing caused by cycling, exercise or wearing tight-fitting clothing. Others experience discomfort related to sagging labia during sexual activity, or seek vaginal rejuvenation surgery to restore the anatomy following childbirth. The motivation is highly personal, and we listen to your reasons to design a treatment plan that is fully tailored to your anatomical circumstances.

Frequently asked questions about lower abdominal surgery

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about intimate surgery

Does it hurt after labia reduction surgery?

It is normal to experience some burning and tenderness in the first few days following your labiaplasty. Your surgeon will prescribe painkillers to manage this and make your initial recovery easier.

How is a fat transfer to the outer labia performed?

The procedure involves the surgeon gently extracting a small amount of fat from another area of your body (often the abdomen or the backs of the knees). The fat is purified and then injected with high precision into the outer labia to restore natural volume and softness.

How long does the swelling last (before and after abdominal surgery)?

The swelling is most pronounced during the first 48 hours to a week. Depending on the procedure (liposuction of the mons pubis, for example, behaves slightly differently from surgery on mucous membranes), it can take several weeks, up to a couple of months, before the internal swelling in the tissue has completely subsided.

Does labiaplasty reduce sensation?

Due to the swelling that occurs and the effect of the surgery on the superficial nerves, many people experience temporary numbness in the area. However, sensation usually returns gradually over a period of about six months.

When can I start exercising again after intimate surgery?

Short, gentle walks are encouraged from an early stage, but you must avoid all forms of strenuous exercise, cycling, horse riding and heavy lifting for at least six weeks to avoid causing bleeding or damaging the delicate stitches.

How long does the recovery period last?

If you have a physically light and sedentary job, you can often return to work after around three to five days. Penetrative sexual activity, as well as bathing in a bath or swimming pool, must be strictly avoided for the first six weeks to prevent the risk of infection.
