What is microneedling (Dermapen)?

Microneedling is a scientifically proven method based on the principle of collagen induction therapy (CIT). Using an electronic pen fitted with sterile disposable needles, we create thousands of microscopic channels into the middle layer of the skin (the dermis). These controlled, microscopic injuries immediately trigger the body’s natural healing cascade. The skin reacts by releasing growth factors and activating the fibroblasts – the cells that act as the skin’s own factories for the production of collagen and elastin. The result of this biological process is that the skin gradually builds up new, stronger and more cohesive tissue from within. Depending on the clinic and the purpose, the method is often named after the advanced tools used, for example, a Dermapen treatment or SkinPen microneedling.

Our microneedling treatments

At The Faculty, we use only the most well-documented and safe microneedling equipment available on the market. The method and depth we use are carefully tailored to your individual needs.

Dermapen 4 and SkinPen

These are world-leading, CE-marked and FDA-approved devices (such as Collagen PIN). They oscillate at an extremely high speed and can be adjusted in depth from 0.25 mm down to 2.5 mm, depending on whether we are treating thin skin around the eyes or deeper scars on the cheeks.

Active microneedling serums

As the needles create channels, we infuse bespoke, sterile serums packed with hyaluronic acid, peptides or antioxidants. The channels increase the absorption of these substances by up to 300% compared to when they are applied to the surface.

Gentle approach

Older methods, such as manual derma rollers, risked tearing the epidermis because the needles moved in and out at an angle. Our modern tools, such as the Dermapen, penetrate the skin vertically at a 90-degree angle at tremendous speed (up to hundreds of punctures per second). This minimises damage to the epidermis, keeps the skin barrier intact and makes the treatment incredibly gentle. This ensures a quicker recovery and eliminates the risk of unwanted scarring.

A clinic full of expertise

Perforating the skin is a medical procedure that requires strict hygiene and anatomical expertise. Recently, there has been an increase in searches for ‘microneedling at home’ or ‘best dermapen for home use’. We strongly advise against using a so-called microneedling pen for home use. Home devices cannot be properly sterilised in an autoclave (as in a clinic), the needles quickly become blunt and risk tearing the skin, and incorrect depth over bony areas can cause permanent damage or serious infections. At The Faculty, you will meet our qualified skin specialists who use sterile, single-use cartridges in a clinical environment. Your safety and the health of your skin can never be compromised.

Price for microneedling

The exact cost will be determined during your consultation, depending on the treatment area and whether you choose the classic Dermapen. To achieve structural changes in the skin, a course of several treatments is usually the most effective option.

Pre-microneedling consultation

Your journey to stronger skin always begins with a personalised consultation with one of our specialists. We carry out an in-depth analysis of your skin’s condition, assess any scars or lines, and review your medical history. We explain objectively how the method works physiologically, what the healing process involves, and what you can expect.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the consultation, you have a statutory reflection period of at least 48 hours to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

Microneedling: Step by step

To make sure you know exactly what to expect, we have a very clear process from the first meeting to the final check.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We examine your skin barrier to rule out any active inflammation. We adjust the needle depth individually for different areas of the face; the forehead requires a shallower depth, whilst the cheeks can tolerate a deeper one to reach the scar tissue.

Before your procedure

Preparations for safe treatment

The skin is thoroughly double-cleansed and disinfected. If we are to work deeper into the skin, we apply a medical numbing cream and leave it to take effect for around 20 minutes, which makes the treatment very gentle and comfortable.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

We apply a highly concentrated, clinical serum (often hyaluronic acid) to the area. This acts both as a lubricant for the pen and as a nourishing agent that is delivered directly into the thousands of micro-channels created.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Once the entire area has been treated, the skin is gently cleansed again. We often apply a sterile, cooling biocellulose mask to the face. This immediately soothes the treated area, reduces redness and locks in moisture. sun protection.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

Immediately afterwards, your skin will be red, much like after a severe sunburn. Aftercare following microneedling is extremely important. You must not touch your face, apply make-up or engage in any strenuous exercise for the next 24 to 48 hours, to allow the micro-vessels to close undisturbed and to prevent infection.

Results of microneedling

The biological process of skin regeneration takes time, which is why the results of microneedling are gradual. Immediately after the treatment, once the skin has settled down, many people notice an improved radiance and firmness (often within one to two weeks). However, the real skin improvement takes place deep within the dermis, where new type III collagen is slowly converted into the stronger type I collagen. This is a process that continues for up to three to six months after the course of treatment has finished. For the treatment of superficial lines or radiance, 3 treatments may be sufficient. If we are treating deep acne scars or pronounced stretch marks, a course of 4 to 6 treatments is often required for optimal results.

Our specialists

At The Faculty, we draw on our collective expertise. Setting the correct needle depth and assessing skin thickness requires extensive training. Our registered nurses and skincare therapists keep up to date with the latest medical findings. This specialist knowledge forms the basis for you receiving safe and effective treatment using the best equipment on the market.

Who can undergo the treatment?

To undergo a cosmetic procedure with us, you must be at least 18 years old and have generally healthy skin. The method is suitable for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–VI) as it does not use heat that could affect pigmentation, which is a major advantage compared to certain lasers. However, there are certain conditions under which we refrain from treatment. For example, we do not perform the treatment on pregnant or breastfeeding patients due to hormonal changes, an increased risk of pigmentation, and the lack of clinical studies on the effects on the foetus. Nor do we treat skin with active acne (inflamed spots), open wounds, active rosacea, or if you have a history of keloid scarring.

Risks and complications

As with any treatment that breaks the skin barrier, there are potential risks, which is why a clinical setting is essential. The risks associated with microneedling are generally low when the treatment is carried out by professionals. The expected outcome is erythema (severe redness), slight swelling and some dryness or micro-flaking in the days following the treatment. Rarer complications include bacterial infections, which are almost exclusively due to poor hygiene in aftercare (for example, if the patient applies make-up too soon or touches the skin with unwashed hands). Excessive pigmentation may occur if the skin is exposed to unprotected sun during the healing phase.

Other treatments

Microneedling is fantastic for improving skin texture, but sometimes other methods are needed. If your main goal is to achieve a more noticeable skin-tightening effect, mechanical ultrasound treatment (Sofwave) may be a strong alternative. For immediate deep hydration, we also offer injection treatments with Skinboosters or Profhilo. Our experts will guide you objectively towards the right treatment choice.

Why have microneedling?

Investing in your skin health is a personal choice. Microneedling is a versatile method that can be calibrated to address several different conditions. Often used for acne scars to break down tight scar tissue, or as microneedling for wrinkles to increase skin density. It also tightens tissue in microneedling for large pores, and can help slowly rebuild skin in stretch marks on the body.

Frequently asked questions about microneedling

Frequently asked questions about microneedling and Dermapen.

What is the difference between Dermapen and SkinPen (what is Dermapen)?

Both are world-leading, medically certified brands in the field of microneedling pens, with extremely high standards of sterility and performance. The principle is the same; the difference lies primarily in the manufacturers. We use only the absolute safest and most modern equipment, regardless of the specific brand.

Dermapen isn't working for me – why is that?

If a patient feels that Dermapen treatment in Stockholm or elsewhere has not produced results, this is often due to two factors: an incorrect (too shallow) needle depth at the clinic, or unrealistic expectations regarding the timeline. Collagen takes up to six months to mature. A single treatment provides a glow, but reducing deep scars or wrinkles requires a dedicated course of treatment.

What should I bear in mind after microneedling (aftercare for microneedling)?

Avoid touching your skin, taking hot showers, using a sauna, or exercising for the first 48 hours. Your skin is like an open sponge. Do not apply any make-up until at least the following day. You must also stop using active skincare products (such as retinol, BHA/AHA acids) for about a week, and strictly use SPF 50 every day.

Can I buy a microneedling serum and do it at home?

We strongly advise against any form of home treatment. Needles sold for home use are rarely sterile and quickly lose their sharpness. Pressing unclean products into open wounds can cause serious bacterial infections and leave you with permanent scars on your face instead of healing them.

How often should you have microneedling (how often should you have microneedling)?

It depends on the specific condition. For general skin rejuvenation and revitalisation, we recommend leaving approximately 4–6 weeks between sessions. If we are treating deep acne scars, the interval may be adjusted slightly. Your practitioner will draw up a detailed plan during the consultation.

Is microneedling or laser treatment the best option?

Both methods are excellent. Lasers, such as fractional lasers, use light and heat to vaporise the skin and stimulate new growth. This sometimes produces faster results but involves a longer recovery time and a higher risk of pigmentation changes in darker skin types. Microneedling is a mechanical procedure, extremely safe for all skin tones and involves a shorter recovery period.
