What does laser hair removal involve?

What actually happens in the skin from a physiological point of view? Permanent laser hair reduction works by the machine emitting highly concentrated pulses of light. The light is selectively absorbed by the melanin (the dark pigment) in the hair shaft. The light travels down to the root, where the energy is immediately converted into intense heat (around 70 degrees Celsius). This heat coagulates and permanently cuts off the blood supply to the hair follicle, eliminating its ability to produce new hairs.

Our methods for permanent hair reduction

In medical dermatology, there are several types of laser available for effective hair reduction. Our specialists will assess which technology is best suited to your skin’s physiology.

Alexandrite laser hair removal

This type of laser is known to be extremely effective on lighter skin with dark hair, as the light energy is absorbed very strongly by the melanin in the hair. We use the Clarity II, which is rated as the world’s best hair removal laser.

Gentle approach

A fundamental principle of laser hair removal is our deep respect for the skin’s outermost layer (the epidermis). Thanks to the integrated cooling systems in our machines, the skin is constantly cooled with precision at exactly the same time as thermal energy is delivered deep into the dermis. This methodical and clinically balanced approach protects healthy tissue, makes the procedure significantly gentler and ensures that the energy is focused solely on cutting off the blood supply to the hair follicle itself.

A clinic full of expertise

Treating the skin with intense thermal energy requires a deep understanding of dermatology and the body’s melanin levels. At The Faculty, your treatment is carried out exclusively by registered nurses and specialist skincare therapists. Our practice is based on proven medical evidence. By carrying out all procedures in a strictly clinical environment, we ensure that you receive professional and safe care from your initial skin analysis through to the final assessment.

Price for laser hair removal

Consultation before injection treatment

Your journey begins with a personal consultation. We’ll assess your skin type and hair colour to ensure that your hair follicles contain enough pigment for the laser to be effective. You will receive factual information about the number of recommended treatments, how your skin reacts to the heat, and the advice you need to follow.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Laser hair removal
Step by step

To make sure you know exactly what to expect, we have a very clear process from the first meeting to the final check.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet our specialist, who will assess the contrast between your skin and your hair. We will review your medical history to rule out any medications (such as certain antibiotics) that make your skin extremely sensitive to light, which would constitute a direct medical contraindication to laser treatment.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

You must not wax, epilate or pluck the hair with tweezers for four weeks prior to your appointment, as the laser needs an intact root to target. The area must not be sunburnt. On the morning of your appointment, or the evening before, you must carefully shave the treatment area with a razor.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

Once you are settled in, the area is cleaned to remove any skin lotions or deodorants. Depending on the laser machine, we often apply an optical cooling gel to the skin, which acts as a light conductor and protects against friction. Both you and your practitioner will wear protective goggles.

After treatment

Awakening and initial rest

The specialist systematically sweeps the laser handpiece across the skin. Rapid pulses of light are emitted at regular intervals. The heat generated in the hair follicle can be felt, and is often described as a slight prick or a rubber band snapping against the skin. The machine’s built-in cooling system immediately alleviates the sensation.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

It is a completely normal physiological reaction for the hair follicles to swell (perifollicular oedema) and for the skin to become red. This often subsides within a couple of hours. You must strictly avoid direct sunlight on the treated area, and refrain from saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for the first 24 hours.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After around one to three weeks, the treated hair will be ‘shed’ and fall out. The next session in your course of treatment is scheduled four to eight weeks later, depending entirely on the anatomical area being treated and the specific hair growth cycle.

Results of laser hair removal

Clinically speaking, the term ‘permanent laser hair removal’ refers to permanent hair reduction. The laser destroys only those hair follicles that are in the active growth phase. As your hairs grow in different cycles, the hair falls out gradually after each session. After a full course of treatment, the vast majority of people experience a reduction in hair growth of around 80 to 90 per cent. Any hairs that remain are often significantly thinner and lighter in colour. In the event of future hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or the menopause), new, previously dormant hair follicles may be activated.

Our specialists

When you visit The Faculty, you will be looked after by qualified nurses and skin therapists with specialist expertise in medical lasers. Operating machines that generate intense heat and assessing melanin levels requires an in-depth understanding of the body’s physiology. Their collective medical expertise and experience of working to strict safety protocols are your best safeguard against skin damage.

Who can undergo the treatment?

The procedure is suitable for healthy individuals over the age of 18. The method targets pigment, which makes it most effective on dark hair. Thanks to modern technology, we can now perform laser hair removal on dark skin with very high safety margins. However, the method is less effective for patients seeking laser hair removal for blonde, grey or red hair, as these hairs lack the necessary pigment to absorb the light. As a precaution, we do not perform laser hair removal on pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Risks and complications

All light and heat treatments carry certain risks. Expected and harmless side effects of laser hair removal include temporary redness and slight swelling. Specific risks, which often arise if the skin has recently been exposed to the sun, include superficial burns and pigmentation changes (brown or white spots). We strongly advise against purchasing and using home laser hair removal devices, as these lack professional cooling systems. If used incorrectly without clinical knowledge, there is a high risk of uneven hair regrowth and serious burns.

Other treatments

Hair-free, smooth skin is often the goal, but sometimes our patients wish for further skin improvement to achieve a complete transformation. If you have areas on your face where the skin has lost elasticity or radiance after we have treated unwanted hair growth, a chemical biorevitalisation treatment, such as PRX-T33, can even out your skin tone from within. For patients experiencing extreme dryness on their legs or arms, we recommend our deeply moisturising skincare treatments to strengthen the skin barrier following a completed laser course.

Why choose laser hair removal?

The reasons for seeking laser hair removal vary greatly from person to person. Some people want to reduce hair growth to avoid skin irritation and inflammation in the bikini line or on the legs. Others seek laser hair removal on the face to deal with hair on the upper lip or neck. It is also very common for men to undergo laser hair removal to treat the back, chest or stomach. We do not judge your goals. Our focus is on creating an objective and safe treatment plan based on your skin tone and hair colour.

Frequently asked questions about laser hair removal

Frequently asked questions and answers about laser hair removal

Is laser hair removal painful?

The sensation of pain varies from person to person and often depends on the area being treated. Most people describe it as short, warm pricks or the sensation of a small rubber band snapping against the skin. Our machines are equipped with powerful cooling systems that cool the skin immediately, making the procedure much more bearable than older methods.

For laser hair removal, how many sessions are needed to achieve the desired result?

As the laser only affects hair in the active growth phase, a course of treatment is always required. For the vast majority of patients, between 6 and 10 treatments are recommended to achieve an 80–90 per cent reduction in hair growth.

Can men have treatments on their intimate areas? (intimate laser hair removal / testicles)

Yes. Laser treatment of the intimate area is entirely possible and common for both men and women. We perform laser treatments on the pubic area, the groin and sometimes the scrotum (testicles), but we always do so with great care and using an adjusted energy level, as the skin in these areas is extremely thin and pigmented.

Can you remove hair that grows on the nose or in the ears? (laser hair removal on the nose)

We can treat the hairs growing on the bridge of the nose (on the skin’s surface) as well as facial hair on the cheekbones and neck. However, we never treat inside the nostrils or deep within the ear canal, as the mucous membranes there are very sensitive and the hairs fulfil an important physiological filtering function.

Can light-coloured hair or dark skin be treated?

Laser hair removal on dark skin is now very safe thanks to modern Nd:YAG lasers, which spare the skin’s surface pigment and penetrate deeper into the root. However, lasers generally work very poorly on light blonde, red or grey hair, as these hairs lack the necessary melanin to absorb the heat.

Is it dangerous to have laser hair removal whilst pregnant?

There is no clinical evidence to suggest that the light could harm the foetus, as it only penetrates a few millimetres into the skin. However, we always advise against treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a strict precaution. Furthermore, the hormonal changes during this period mean that hair growth becomes unpredictable and the skin is more prone to pigmentation.

Do home laser hair removal devices work?

We generally advise against using home-use devices. These are, in most cases, very low-intensity IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices. They rarely result in permanent hair removal; instead, they often merely ‘numb’ the hair follicle temporarily. Without the right knowledge of skin tones, there is also an increased risk of misuse and uneven hair growth.
