This is the most common surgical technique. A discreet incision is made just below the nostrils and the base of the nose, where a small strip of skin is removed to shorten the distance to the upper lip and gently roll the vermilion border upwards.
Lip augmentation using your own fat
For those who wish for more volume, autologous fat can be transferred from another area of the body directly to the lips; this is best done in combination with a lift.
Lip flip and fillers in the upper lip
As non-surgical alternatives or complementary treatments, our qualified injection nurses offer local volume enhancement with hyaluronic acid, or a procedure known as a ‘lip flip’, in which a muscle relaxant is used to relax the edge of the upper lip and cause it to turn upwards slightly.

Consultation prior to a lip lift
The first step in your journey is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist, either at our clinic or via a video call. During this consultation, a clinical assessment of your facial proportions will be carried out, and you will be given information about surgical techniques, risks and the healing process.
Based on this, a personalised treatment plan will be drawn up. Following the consultation, you are entitled to a statutory reflection period of at least seven days, so that you can make your decision in peace and quiet before giving your consent to the procedure.

You will meet a qualified plastic surgeon who will carry out a thorough analysis of your facial anatomy and the distance between your nose and upper lip. Together, you will discuss your expectations and consider whether a surgical lip lift or a minor procedure such as lip augmentation using fat is best suited to meet your wishes in an anatomically harmonious way.
Before your procedure
Preparing for a safe operation
Once your statutory cooling-off period has expired and you have chosen to give your consent, your surgery date will be scheduled. Our coordinator will provide you with full instructions. It is absolutely essential that you completely abstain from smoking and nicotine products for at least four weeks prior to the operation, as nicotine impairs blood circulation and reduces the skin’s ability to heal properly.
The day of the operation
Safe care at the clinic
When you arrive at the clinic, our team will take good care of you. You will change into a hospital gown and meet your surgeon for the final markings and photographs ahead of your lip lift. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic combined with sedation (a calming agent), but can also be carried out under general anaesthetic if preferred. The procedure normally takes around an hour.
After the operation
Awakening and initial rest
Once the procedure is complete, you will rest in our recovery room under the supervision of a nurse. It is perfectly normal to experience significant swelling, tightness and localised tenderness in the upper lip and around the base of the nose during the first 24 hours. You will be given personalised pain relief instructions and medication to take home with you, and you can be discharged and leave the clinic on the same day.
Recovery & healing
Self-care and convalescence guidelines
For the first few days after your lip surgery, you should rest with your head elevated and avoid straining your facial muscles unnecessarily. Physical exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided completely during the first few weeks. The stitches under the nose are normally removed after seven to ten days. Careful wound care and protecting the new scar from direct sunlight are crucial for healing.
Monitoring & results
Medical check-up and final assessment
After a week, our nurse will carry out an initial wound check. The initial swelling will largely subside within a couple of weeks, but the tissue will continue to settle over a longer period. After around six months, you will be booked in for a final follow-up appointment with your plastic surgeon to assess the final anatomical result and take some final photographs.

Who is eligible for a lip lift?
To undergo a surgical lip lift, you must be over 18 years of age and in good general health. The procedure is suitable for individuals who have a large distance between the nose and the upper lip, or where the red part of the upper lip is very narrow and recessed. It is crucial that your expectations are realistic and based on what is anatomically feasible. As smoking drastically impairs oxygenation of the tissue and increases the risk of wound complications and prominent scarring, you must be completely smoke-free in the weeks leading up to and following the operation.

How much does a lip lift cost?
A surgical lip lift (lip augmentation/lip lift) at The Faculty costs 33,900 SEK. If the procedure is performed in combination with other procedures, such as a nasal wing reduction during a lip lift (SEK 42,000), an additional cost will apply. You will always be given an exact price during your consultation with the surgeon.
Will there be visible scarring after a wing-shaped breast lift?
As a bullhorn lip lift involves a surgical incision, a permanent scar will result. However, this is positioned very discreetly in the natural crease just below the base of the nose. With proper wound care and taping, a bullhorn lip lift scar gradually fades over time and becomes very discreet in most people.
Does lip surgery hurt?
The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic combined with sedation, which means that the operation itself is completely pain-free. Afterwards, it is normal to experience a throbbing sensation, significant swelling and tenderness in the upper lip during the first few days. This is effectively managed with standard painkillers.
What is the difference between a lip lift and a lip flip?
A lip lift is a permanent surgical procedure in which skin is removed to shorten the distance below the nose. A lip flip is a non-surgical injection treatment in which muscle relaxants are injected around the edge of the upper lip to make it relax and roll upwards slightly.
How long does a lip flip last compared to a surgical lift?
A surgical lip lift produces permanent results as skin is physically removed. A lip flip produces a temporary effect that usually lasts for around 3 to 4 months, after which the treatment needs to be repeated if you wish to maintain the results.
Can I view before-and-after photos of lip lifts on the website?
For medical and regulatory reasons, we do not display clinical ‘before and after’ images openly on our website; however, during your personal consultation at the clinic, the surgeon will go through objective reference images (before and after brachioplasty) to demonstrate what is anatomically possible.
Can you get a lip lift covered by the county council?
No, an upper lip lift or a bullhorn lip procedure is considered a purely cosmetic procedure and is not funded by the public healthcare system (the county council/region). The Faculty is a fully private clinic offering specialist plastic surgery in Stockholm.
