What does a mid-face lift involve?

A mid-face lift is a surgical procedure that specifically targets the middle third of the face. Unlike procedures that focus on the neck and jawline, this procedure aims to lift the sagging fat pads above the cheekbones (malar fat pads) and to smooth out the transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek. By lifting the tissue vertically, it is possible to anatomically restore the volume above the cheek area that has gradually diminished over the years.

Our techniques for mid-face lifts

To achieve an anatomically sound result, our surgeons work on the deep tissues rather than simply stretching the skin.

Endoscopic mid-face lift

Through small incisions, often concealed in the hairline at the temples or inside the mouth, the malar fat pad is repositioned back to its original position above the cheekbone.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate facial tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and creating the conditions for extremely discreet scars.

The Evolution of You

Mid-face lift
Step by step

For your peace of mind, we have designed a secure process, from your initial enquiry right through to your final check-up. Here is an overview of how the procedure works.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a specialist surgeon who will analyse your facial features and discuss whether the approach via the temple or the mouth is best suited to your anatomy.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once the reflection period is over, your operation will be booked. You will be given clear instructions, which include a strict requirement to stop smoking four weeks before and after the operation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to hospital and meet your surgeon and anaesthetist for a final consultation. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic, usually takes 3–5 hours, and the incisions are carefully made along the hairline and around the ears.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be closely monitored in our recovery room. It is common to feel tightness in your cheeks. Most patients are able to go home the same day with prescribed pain relief.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

During the first few weeks at home, you should rest and keep your head elevated to minimise swelling. You should avoid physical exertion for at least a month.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We schedule regular check-ups with our nurses for stitch removal and wound monitoring. After around six months, you will see the surgeon for a follow-up appointment.

Results following a mid-face lift

The results following a mid-face lift are largely influenced by your original anatomy and the weight of the tissue. During the first few weeks, it is perfectly normal for the cheeks and the area under the eyes to be noticeably swollen and tight, and for bruising to occur. Initially, the cheeks may look slightly overcorrected (too high), but the tissue gradually settles and adapts to its natural position. We monitor your healing process closely, and the anatomical result is usually assessed after six to twelve months, once the scars have begun to fade and the face has softened into its final shape.

Who is eligible for a mid-face lift?

To book a cosmetic surgical procedure, you must be over 18 years of age and in good general health. During your consultation, we will carry out a thorough medical assessment to ensure that your anatomical conditions are suitable for the procedure. It is a strict medical requirement that you are completely smoke-free in the run-up to the operation, as nicotine impairs blood circulation and significantly increases the risk of healing complications.

Possible complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. These include general surgical risks such as bleeding, infection or asymmetry in the healing process. With specific procedures on the face, there is a small risk of temporary nerve damage, which can cause numbness or reduced mobility, as well as visible scarring. During the consultation, the surgeon will provide detailed information about these risks and how we work methodically and proactively to minimise them.

Other facial surgery treatments

In addition to mid-face lifts, The Faculty offers a range of procedures tailored to your needs. If your goal is to address the jawline as well, a traditional lower face lift may be more suitable. It is also very common to combine a facelift with upper or lower eyelid surgery, or to use fat grafting to naturally restore volume to areas that have lost it.

Why consider a mid-face lift?

As we get older, the face naturally loses volume and elasticity, which is often most noticeable in the cheeks and under the eyes. Many patients choose to undergo a mid-face lift for their own well-being, with a desire to restore the cheeks to their original position and profile. The motivation is personal, and we listen carefully to your reasons in order to devise a realistic surgical plan. Our aim is not to alter your appearance, but to work with your anatomy to achieve a balanced and natural result.

Frequently asked questions about mid-face lifts

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding mid-face lifts

What is the difference between a facelift and a mid-face lift?

This is a very common question. The main difference between a full facelift and a mid-face lift lies in the area being treated. A traditional lower facelift focuses on the jawline, jowls and the upper neck. A mid-face lift targets exclusively the cheeks and the area directly beneath the eyes. Often, patients seeking a mid-face lift do not have loose skin on the neck, but primarily wish to restore volume above the cheekbones.

Is a mid-face lift performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic?

In most cases, the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia for the patient’s comfort and to enable the surgeon to work with optimum precision in the deeper tissue pockets. Although certain minor surgical adjustments could theoretically be performed as a mid-face lift under local anaesthesia combined with sedation, our specialists and anaesthetists generally recommend general anaesthesia for this particular type of facial surgery.

Will there be visible scars from the mid-face lift after the operation?

All surgical procedures leave scars, but our priority is always to make them as discreet as possible. With an endoscopic facelift, the incisions are well concealed within the hairline at the temples. If the procedure is performed via the mouth, the incision is made on the inside of the mucous membrane. These incisions (mid-face lift scars) generally heal exceptionally well, and after a few months they are usually very difficult to detect with the naked eye.

How long will it take before I see the final result?

You will notice an immediate difference, but initially your cheeks will look ‘too high’ and be swollen. This swelling (particularly around the eyes) will mostly subside within the first three to four weeks. However, the tissue needs time to relax and ‘settle’ into its new anatomical position. Therefore, it may take between six and twelve months before you can assess the exact and final result of your operation.

Is it possible to view photos of mid-face lifts taken before the operation?

Yes, during your clinical consultation, the surgeon will show you objective medical images of mid-face lifts from previous operations (with consent). Looking at before-and-after images will help you understand how the surgical technique affects the volume and position of the cheeks from an anatomical perspective. This is an important step in ensuring that your expectations align with what is surgically possible.

How can I find someone who has had a mid-face lift to talk to?

It can be reassuring to hear about other people’s experiences. You can often find patient testimonials online from people who have had a mid-face lift, but remember that every patient’s experience of pain and results is highly personal. At The Faculty, we have published Trustpilot reviews from verified patients who have had surgery with us, where you can read about their sense of security and the care they received throughout the entire surgical process.

Can the procedure be combined with other treatments to achieve the best results?

Absolutely. It’s actually very common. Many people choose to have a mid-face lift carried out in conjunction with upper or lower eyelid surgery to harmonise the entire mid-face area, including the eyes and cheeks. It is also common for the surgeon to complement the procedure with fat grafting (lipofilling) to add a little extra volume to specific areas of the face where the tissue has lost its fullness.
