What does a facelift involve?

A facelift is a major cosmetic surgical procedure designed to lift and reposition sagging skin and the underlying muscles of the face and neck. The aim is to tighten the jawline and restore a firmer structure to the face. With modern facelifts and modern techniques, the plastic surgeon does not simply stretch the skin, but also moves the entire tissue package (skin, fat and muscles) more as a single unit. This produces a more natural, softer and less stiff result. This technique, known as ‘deep plane’, always requires a higher degree of specialisation and experience.

Our facelift techniques

To achieve a natural and anatomically sound result, our plastic surgeons do not work solely on the skin, but focus on the deeper tissue structures (SMAS/deep plane).

Full facelift

This involves repositioning the tissue and muscles across the cheeks, jawline and neck, thereby comprehensively restoring the face’s underlying structure.

Lower face lift

Specifically designed to firm the skin and muscles around the jawline, chin and upper neck.

Mid-face lift

A mid-face lift is a type of facelift that focuses on the central part of the face – specifically the cheeks and the area under the eyes.

What it targets: Sagging or flatter cheeks Deeper lines from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds)
A tired or sunken feeling under the eyes

How it works: Instead of tightening the entire face, the tissue in the cheek area is lifted, so that the volume is restored to its previous position. This often creates a fresher and more natural appearance.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate facial tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure.

This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and creating the conditions for extremely discreet scars.

The Evolution of You

Facelift
Step by step

For your peace of mind, we have designed a secure process, from your initial enquiry right through to your final check-up. Here is an overview of how the procedure works.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a specialist surgeon who will analyse your facial features. Together, you will discuss whether a full facelift, a deep-plane facelift or a minor lower facelift is best suited to your facial structure.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

After the reflection period, an appointment will be arranged with a coordinator to provide further information on preparations, post-operative care and waiting times. You will receive clear instructions, which include a strict requirement to stop smoking (at least 4 weeks before and after the operation) and to abstain from alcohol (at least 4 weeks before and after the operation). You will also receive information on how to wash your hair and body the day before and on the day of the operation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the hospital and meet your plastic surgeon and anaesthetist for a final consultation. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic, usually takes 4–8 hours, and the incisions are carefully made along the hairline and around the ears.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be monitored and cared for in our recovery room. There are doctors and nurses here, all of whom specialise in managing the recovery process following anaesthesia.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The first few weeks at home require rest and relaxation, with your head elevated. The stitches are removed in two sessions, after one week and after two weeks. You should avoid physical exertion for at least a month.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We schedule regular check-ups to monitor the healing of the scar. After around six to twelve months, you will see the plastic surgeon for a final follow-up appointment and to have photographs taken.

Results following a facelift

The results of a facelift are largely influenced by your original anatomy, the weight of the tissue and your general ability to heal. During the first few weeks, it is perfectly normal for the face to be noticeably swollen, tight and for bruising to occur. Initially, the skin may feel tight and facial features slightly stiff, before the tissues and muscles gradually adapt to their new position. We monitor your healing process closely, and the anatomical result is usually assessed after six to twelve months, once the scars have begun to fade and the face has softened into its final shape.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for a facelift?

To ensure safe anaesthesia and optimal healing, you must be over 18 years of age and in good general health. During the consultation, we will methodically review your medical history, including how your initial healing process went. Active smoking is a major medical risk factor for all surgery, but particularly for reduction surgery where blood circulation in the tissue is already compromised.

Possible complications and risks

As with all plastic surgery, there are risks involved. These include general complications such as bleeding under the skin (haematoma), infection or uneven wound healing. With facelifts specifically, there is also a small risk of damage to the facial nerve, asymmetry or visible scarring after the procedure, particularly behind the ears. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will provide detailed information about these risks and how we work methodically, using gentle techniques, to actively minimise them.

Other facial surgery treatments

In addition to classic facelifts, The Faculty offers a wide range of treatments and procedures tailored to your individual anatomy. Our plastic surgeons often perform complementary procedures such as upper or lower eyelid surgery, neck lifts and forehead lifts. It is also common to combine the lift with a fat transfer to the face to naturally restore volume to the cheeks or lips where tissue has diminished.

Why consider a facelift?

Over time, the skin’s elasticity changes and the underlying connective tissue in the face naturally sags, affecting the contours of the face and neck. Many people choose to undergo a surgical facelift to restore the jawline, forehead, cheeks and neck. The decision is usually based on a personal choice to restore the face’s proportions to a profile with which you identify. We listen carefully to your expectations and create a treatment plan that respects your unique anatomical features, without altering your basic appearance.

Frequently asked questions about facelifts

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers about facelifts

What alternatives are there to surgery? (non-surgical facelift)

We are often asked about methods for a "non-surgical facelift", such as HIFU facelifts (ultrasound) or facelifts using fillers. These treatments can temporarily tighten the skin or restore volume and can be a good first step. However, it is important to know that even the best non-surgical facelift can never provide the same lasting or extensive anatomical restructuring as a genuine surgical facelift, particularly where there is a significant amount of excess skin. How much does a non-surgical facelift cost? Injections are significantly cheaper (from around 4,000 SEK depending on the method), but require regular maintenance.

What is the difference between a lower facelift and a full facelift?

A lower facelift (sometimes called a mini facelift) focuses exclusively on the lower third of the face – that is, the jawline and sometimes the upper part of the neck. It is less extensive and often has a shorter recovery time. Prices for a lower facelift also start at a lower level (from SEK 80,900). A full facelift addresses the entire mid-face, cheeks, jawline and neck simultaneously.

How can I avoid complications and a 'botched facelift'?

The term "botched facelift" often refers to older techniques where the skin has been pulled too tightly, resulting in a tight or "wind-blown" appearance, or where severe scarring has occurred. To minimise the risk of this, our specialists use modern "deep plane" and SMAS techniques, where the tension is applied to the underlying tissue, not the skin. Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon with extensive experience, and strictly adhering to a ban on smoking and alcohol, are the most important factors in ensuring a safe and medically sound outcome.

Will there be visible scars after a facelift?

Scars are inevitable with surgery, but in a facelift, the incisions are strategically placed to be as discreet as possible. They are usually made within or just at the edge of the hairline at the temples, follow the natural creases of the ear (sometimes inside the ear) and continue behind the ear into the hair at the nape of the neck. With our advanced suturing techniques and strict post-operative care instructions, these scars fade during the first year and often become very difficult to detect.

How long does the recovery and aftercare take?

The first 48 hours are the most critical in terms of swelling, and dressings are often used to apply pressure (face lift). You should expect to take time off work and avoid social gatherings for around two to three weeks due to bruising and swelling. Physical exercise, activities that raise your heart rate and heavy lifting must be avoided for at least four to six weeks so as not to increase blood pressure and risk bleeding under the skin and increased swelling.

How long does a facelift last?

A facelift does not stop the natural ageing process, but it does ‘turn back the clock’ anatomically. Depending on your genetics, the quality of your skin and how well you protect yourself from the sun, most patients find that the results of a deep facelift last for 10 to 15 years. The surgery establishes a new, firmer underlying structure, which means that, anatomically speaking, you will always look younger than you would have if you hadn’t had the procedure.

Why do people search for ‘best facelift in Sweden’, and does the clinic matter?

It is only natural that many people search for “the best clinic for a facelift” or “the best plastic surgeon in Sweden for a facelift”; after all, you can’t hide your face. At The Faculty, we always encourage patients to be critical of their sources, to check the plastic surgeon’s formal specialist qualifications, to look for verified reviews, and to ensure that the operation takes place in premises equipped to the highest safety standards. The most important thing is that you feel completely confident during your consultation.
