What does liposuction of the legs involve?

Liposuction of the legs is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to gently reduce localised fat deposits. Depending on your body shape, the treatment can target specific areas such as the thighs, knees or calves. The surgeon uses a gentle technique to permanently remove fat cells and create a smoother contour. For patients with lipoedema, more extensive liposuction of the entire legs may be medically justified. During your consultation, we will discuss in detail which method is most suitable for your anatomical conditions.

Our methods for liposuction of the legs

At The Faculty, we use surgical techniques based on scientific evidence and extensive clinical experience. The choice of method is always tailored to your anatomical profile, skin quality and the amount of subcutaneous fat, in order to achieve a natural definition of the bone contours.

Liposuction of the entire legs and thighs

Focuses on reducing volume on the inner thighs, the front of the thighs or around the entire thigh (circumference) to achieve a more balanced shape.

Liposuction of the thighs

A targeted method for removing stubborn fat deposits on the outer thighs and hips, resulting in a sleeker silhouette along the outer side of the leg.

Liposuction of the knees and calves

An anatomically precise procedure performed to create a clearer definition of the lower leg, the kneecap and the ankle.

Liposuction for lipoedema

For patients with lipoedema, specialised volume-reducing techniques are applied to large areas of the legs in order to remove pathological fatty tissue and alleviate physical symptoms.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of the area being treated, our specialists always use advanced liposuction techniques that minimise trauma to the surrounding tissue. By using very fine cannulas and a precise approach, we can effectively reduce bleeding and swelling during the procedure itself. This not only promotes a smoother and safer recovery, but is also crucial to ensuring that the millimetre-sized entry points heal optimally and remain as discreet as possible.

Pre-operative consultation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will be given a specific treatment proposal tailored to your body. After the consultation, you will have at least seven days to consider the matter and decide, at your leisure, whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Liposuction of the legs
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how our leg liposuction procedure works, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet a plastic surgery specialist who will carefully assess the distribution of fat across your legs and evaluate your skin’s elasticity in order to recommend the safest method.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once consent has been given, you will receive clear instructions from your coordinator. It is an absolute medical requirement that you do not smoke for four weeks before and after the operation to ensure good blood circulation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, the surgeon marks out exactly the areas to be treated. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the operation is carried out either under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic, in consultation with our anaesthetist.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up safely in the recovery room. Your legs will be swollen and feel tender. You will be given painkillers and fitted with a fitted compression garment that covers the treated areas.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Initially, you should rest at home. You should wear the compression garment around the clock at first to help reduce swelling. You must avoid any physical exercise that raises your heart rate completely for four to six weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After about a week, a nurse will check the small puncture sites. Around six months later, we will book a follow-up appointment with your surgeon for photographs and an assessment of the healing process.

Results of liposuction on the legs

A good final result depends largely on your skin’s ability to contract to fit the new, reduced volume, as well as your body’s own healing process. The final anatomical outcome can only be fully assessed after six to twelve months, once all deep-seated swelling has subsided. The images on our website are for illustrative purposes only and should never be regarded as a guarantee of your specific results.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for leg liposuction?

To undergo the procedure, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general physical health. A very important factor is the elasticity of the skin; if the skin lacks elasticity, there is an increased risk of unevenness when volume is reduced. This is carefully assessed during the consultation. It is also essential to understand that liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a method for general weight loss.

Risks associated with liposuction of the legs

As with any surgical procedure, there are medical risks to consider, such as bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing. Specifically for liposuction of the legs and lower body, there is a risk of asymmetry, superficial unevenness of the skin, and temporary numbness in the treated area. During your consultation, the surgeon will explain in detail what these risks entail and how we at The Faculty work with strict protocols to minimise them.

Other treatments for the lower body

In cases where skin elasticity is reduced and there is a significant excess of loose skin (for example, following significant weight loss), liposuction is rarely sufficient to achieve a balanced result. In such cases, our surgeons may recommend a surgical thigh lift to remove the excess skin. We always tailor the procedure to your unique physiology.

Why consider liposuction on the legs?

There are many reasons for wanting to reduce volume in the lower body, and they are highly personal. Many people experience localised, genetically determined fat deposits, such as saddle bags, wide knees or excess volume in the calves, which are very difficult to influence through diet or exercise. For others, it is a matter of a diagnosed condition, such as lipoedema, where the fatty tissue in the legs causes both physical pain and a feeling of heaviness. The decision to reshape your body is entirely your own. We listen to your motivations and create a medically based treatment plan that is fully tailored to your individual circumstances.

Frequently asked questions about liposuction of the legs

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about liposuction of the legs, knees and calves

How much does liposuction on the calves and knees cost?

The price for liposuction on the knees alone starts at 25,000 SEK, and for the calves it starts at 44,500 SEK. The final cost is determined based on your body shape and the size of the area to be treated.

Does the fat disappear permanently after liposuction on the thighs?

Yes, the fat cells that are surgically removed are not regenerated. As long as you maintain a relatively stable body weight after the operation, the reduction in volume you see on the outer thighs will therefore be permanent.

Is it possible to have liposuction on the entire legs during the same operation?

Yes, it is possible and is often referred to as circumferential liposuction (around the entire thigh) or forms part of a more extensive lipoedema operation. However, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis, as the surgeon must ensure that the extent of the procedure is medically safe for your body whilst under a single anaesthetic.

Will it hurt after the procedure?

The experience of pain varies from person to person, but it is very common for the legs to feel sore, swollen and tight during the first few days, which often feels similar to severe muscle ache after a strenuous workout. We will provide you with painkillers to help with the initial recovery.

How long do I need to wear compression tights?

To reduce internal swelling and help the skin settle smoothly over the new contours, a specially fitted compression garment should generally be worn around the clock for the first three to four weeks, and sometimes for longer during the day. Your surgeon will give you precise instructions.

When can I start exercising my legs again?

Short, gentle walks are encouraged from the very first days, as they promote good blood circulation. However, all forms of strenuous leg strength training, running and activities that raise the heart rate must be stopped completely for four to six weeks so as not to interfere with the tissue healing process.

Can fat from the legs be used to add volume to other areas?

Yes, that is a common option. This method is known as fat transfer (lipofilling) and involves purifying the fat removed from the legs and then carefully injecting it to add volume to areas such as the bust or buttocks. If you are interested in such a combination procedure, we will carry out a medical assessment during your consultation to ensure that you have sufficient fat tissue to achieve the desired result.
