What does thigh liposuction involve?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which excess fatty tissue is removed using thin cannulas connected to a vacuum system. The aim is to sculpt the area and reduce the circumference of the inner or outer thighs, or around the entire leg. A technique known as the tumescent technique is often used, whereby a fluid containing a local anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor is injected into the fatty tissue beforehand. This significantly facilitates the actual removal of fat and minimises the occurrence of large bruises.

Our techniques for thigh lift and liposuction

We use gentle, scientifically proven techniques to remove fat tissue and create a smooth contour. The most suitable method depends on how the fat is distributed across your body and the elasticity of your skin.

Liposuction of the inner thighs

Focuses on reducing the volume of the inner thighs, which is often sought after to make walking easier and reduce friction.

Liposuction of the outer thighs (saddle bags)

Aims to reduce localised fat deposits on the outer thighs to give the legs a smoother silhouette.

Thigh liposuction (circumference)

A more comprehensive method in which the entire thigh is treated all round, to achieve a uniform reduction in the leg’s volume.

Liposuction for lipoedema

For patients diagnosed with lipoedema, specialised volume-reducing techniques are applied to the entire legs to remove fatty tissue and alleviate physical symptoms.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists employ refined techniques that minimise tissue trauma. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling. This promotes safer healing and is absolutely vital for ensuring that the scars are as discreet as possible.

Consultation before your operation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Thigh liposuction
Step by step

To ensure a safe experience, we have developed a structured process that supports you from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a plastic surgery specialist who will assess the distribution of fat and the elasticity of the skin on your thighs. Together, you will discuss the procedure and whether liposuction is the most medically appropriate option for your body type.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once consent has been given, your coordinator will provide you with written instructions. Among other things, you will need to stop smoking well in advance. The evening before and on the morning of the operation, you should shower as usual using an antibacterial soap.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be welcomed to the clinic and asked to change into a gown. Your plastic surgeon will mark your thighs, answer any questions you may have and explain the procedure once again. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure the highest possible safety and comfort. Before the operation, you will meet your anaesthetist, who will prepare you for the anaesthesia itself.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up feeling calm in our recovery ward. It is normal to feel some tenderness and notice swelling in your thighs. You will be given pain relief and a pair of compression tights, which will help the tissue to heal properly in the initial period.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

During the first few weeks, recovery takes place at home. Light walks are fine, but you must stop all strenuous exercise completely for four to six weeks. The compression garment should be worn around the clock initially, in accordance with the surgeon’s specific instructions.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

About a week after the procedure, a nurse will check your small incision sites. After around six months, we will book a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to assess how well you have healed, take follow-up photographs and evaluate the long-term results.

Results following thigh liposuction

The results of your procedure will become apparent gradually as the swelling in the tissue subsides; it usually takes between three and six months before the full outcome can be assessed. When we look at objective before-and-after images of the chin area, it becomes clear how each patient’s unique anatomical characteristics play a central role in the final outcome. Factors such as the skin’s natural elasticity, age and the exact location of fat beneath the chin are directly decisive for how well the skin adapts and tightens over the new contour.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

The Faculty brings together a group of hand-picked plastic surgeons, several of whom are internationally renowned in their specialist fields. All body contouring procedures, from advanced lipoedema surgery to classic thigh liposuction, are performed by qualified specialists to ensure high-quality and safe care.

Who is eligible for thigh liposuction?

To be eligible for cosmetic surgery, you must be at least 18 years old, a non-smoker and in good general physical health. It is advantageous if you are close to your target weight, as liposuction is a body contouring procedure and not a weight-loss method. Skin elasticity is also a key factor in how evenly the skin tightens after the fat has been removed. During the consultation, we assess these factors objectively.

Complications and risks

All surgical procedures carry risks, which we always discuss openly. General surgical risks include infection, bleeding or impaired wound healing. With liposuction, there is also a specific risk of asymmetry, unevenness in the skin surface or temporary loss of sensation over the treated area. During your consultation with your surgeon, you will systematically go through these risks and how our clinic works to prevent them.

Other procedures in cosmetic surgery

In addition to standard liposuction procedures, The Faculty’s specialists perform a wide range of body contouring procedures. If there is a significant amount of excess skin on the legs, we offer thigh lift surgery to surgically remove the tissue. We also perform buttock surgery and tummy tucks to achieve balanced proportions throughout the lower body.

Why consider thigh liposuction?

The reasons for undergoing body contouring surgery vary. Some patients find that they have stubborn fat deposits on the inner or outer thighs that cannot be reduced through diet or exercise. Others find that their thighs rub against each other when they move. The decision to reshape your silhouette is a personal one based on your own anatomical characteristics. Our focus is on listening to your expectations and offering a safe, medically sound treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions about thigh liposuction

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about thigh liposuction

How much does it hurt afterwards?

The experience of pain varies from person to person, but most people describe it as severe muscle soreness rather than sharp pain. You will be prescribed tailored pain relief to manage the discomfort during the first few days.

When can I go back to work?

If your job does not involve physical labour, many people can return to work after about a week. If you have a physically demanding job, you will need to wait longer; your surgeon will advise you on this.

Will there be a big scar?

No, the incisions used to insert the cannulas are only a few millimetres long. They are placed as discreetly as possible, for example in natural skin folds, and usually fade significantly over time.

Is the result permanent?

The fat cells that are removed do not grow back. If you gain weight after the operation, the new fat will be distributed more evenly across the body’s remaining fat cells, but the overall shape of your thighs will usually remain the same.

Does thigh liposuction help with cellulite?

Liposuction is primarily intended to remove deeper subcutaneous fat and contour the bone structure, not to smooth out the surface skin texture that causes cellulite. In some cases, the skin’s surface may appear slightly smoother as the volume beneath the skin is reduced, but the procedure is not a recommended method for specifically treating dimples in the skin. During your consultation, we will examine your tissue to give you a realistic picture of what the surgery can achieve for your particular skin type.

How long do I need to wear compression garments after the operation?

Following thigh liposuction, it is important that you wear a specially fitted compression garment (often a pair of medical compression trousers) around the clock for the first three to four weeks. Compression is crucial to your healing process; it helps minimise swelling, prevents fluid build-up and supports the skin as it tightens to fit the leg’s new shape. Your surgeon will give you precise instructions based on the extent of your procedure.

Can both the inner and outer thighs be treated at the same time?

Yes, it is very common to combine these areas to achieve a more balanced proportion of the entire lower body. If the medical assessment allows it, we can perform what is known as circumferential liposuction of the thighs, which means that we gently treat the inner, outer, front and back areas during a single operation. We always carry out a thorough health assessment to ensure that a more extensive treatment is a safe and secure option for you.
