What are atrophic scars and acne scars?

Atrophic scars are a type of acne scar that develops following deep inflammation of the skin caused by acne. When the inflammation reaches the dermis, it can damage the surrounding tissue. As the skin attempts to heal, it sometimes produces too little collagen, meaning that the skin does not regain its previous structure. The result is sunken areas or pits in the skin. Treatment of acne scars often involves deliberately creating controlled, microscopic damage to the affected tissue. This stimulates the skin’s own healing process and increases the production of new connective tissue. In this way, the skin can gradually fill out from within and achieve a smoother surface.

Our methods for removing facial scars

To achieve long-lasting skin rejuvenation, a bespoke treatment plan is required. Depending on whether the skin has lost volume or whether we are treating superficial redness or skin damage, such as scars, we use different techniques. We offer the market’s most proven methods for acne treatment in Stockholm.

Laser treatment for acne scars

Fractional CO₂ laser treatment and ablative laser resurfacing are currently the gold standard for laser treatment of acne scars. The intense light generates heat deep within the dermis, prompting the body to produce new collagen, which gradually lifts and reduces the depth of atrophic scars.

Dermapen for acne scars (microneedling)

A method in which extremely fine needles create microscopic channels in the skin to trigger a natural healing process. This is an effective way of treating milder forms of acne scarring.

Laser treatment for acne (Active acne)

As well as treating scar tissue, we offer a specific laser treatment for acne to reduce ongoing, active inflammation and prevent further damage to the skin. The Lase Md Ultra is a laser that reduces acne scars without a long recovery period.

Gentle approach

Treating damaged connective tissue is about stimulation, not causing unnecessary stress to the tissue. Whether we use a powerful skin resurfacing treatment or a more superficial acne laser treatment, our skin specialists work with precise settings to minimise thermal and mechanical trauma to the skin. A gentle approach is crucial for reducing swelling during the healing phase and minimising the risk of pigmentation changes. A precision-controlled laser treatment for facial scars ensures a safe procedure with a focus on your long-term skin health.

The Evolution of You

Treatment for acne scars
Step by step

To ensure you know exactly what to expect, we have a very clear process in place, from the first appointment right through to the final check-up once your treatment plan is complete.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We assess the condition of your skin. We ensure that you do not have severe, active acne that requires medical treatment first. In many cases, a combination of different treatment methods may be appropriate to reduce acne scars and improve the skin’s vitality.

Before your procedure

Preparing for your treatment.

Before undergoing laser treatment for acne or acne scars, it is important that your skin is not sunburnt. To optimise the results and support the healing process, you will receive personalised advice, for example on which skincare products you should use at home and whether you need to avoid smoking during the treatment period.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, we cleanse the face thoroughly and often apply a strong anaesthetic cream. Laser treatment for acne scars usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent of the condition.

After treatment

Awakening and initial rest

Immediately after an intensive acne or laser facial treatment, your skin will be very red, swollen and hot. We will apply protective and soothing products to the area before you go home.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

During the first week, your skin may weep and flake heavily. Do not pick at the scabs. It is extremely important that you use sun cream (SPF 50) every day to avoid damaging the new, sensitive skin.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A follow-up appointment is scheduled at the clinic to ensure that the skin is healing properly. The next session is booked once the skin has fully recovered and we can begin to assess the structural improvement.

Results of acne scar removal

As every individual’s cell renewal and immune system are unique, the results of acne scar treatment vary greatly from person to person. During your consultation, we will look at objective before-and-after photos of acne scar treatment to demonstrate the full scope of what the technology can achieve. The aim is to create a smoother and more even surface. Deep scars are significantly reduced, but rarely disappear completely. Before and after photos of acne scars should therefore be viewed as medical examples of the method’s potential, never as a guarantee of your own outcome. The final result of laser treatment for acne scars does not appear immediately. Patience is required whilst the body’s fibroblasts form new collagen beneath the surface over the next six months.

Our specialists in dermatology and laser treatments

At The Faculty, we have assembled a team of highly trained nurses, skincare therapists and doctors. Assessing and removing scars requires a deep understanding of anatomy and a trained eye for how tissue responds to heat and trauma. Every treatment is carried out with clinical precision, which is the foundation of your medical safety.

Who is eligible for treatment for acne scars?

To book a skincare treatment with us, you must be over 18 years of age. Generally speaking, any active cystic acne should have subsided before we carry out aggressive scar treatments. In such cases, we may start with an acne laser treatment instead. You may also not be treated if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Furthermore, patients who have recently stopped taking strong acne medication (e.g. isotretinoin) must wait up to six months before we can remove scars with a laser.

Risks and complications

As with any medical procedure, there are medical risks to consider. Common reactions following laser treatment for acne include severe redness, a burning sensation and swelling. Specific risks associated with more intense heat treatments for acne scars include hyperpigmentation (where the skin becomes patchily dark) or infection if you do not follow the hygiene and sun protection guidelines we provide. The surgeon or specialist will always explain how we take preventive measures to minimise these risks.

Other treatments for skin texture and scarring

In addition to laser treatment for facial scars, there are other approaches. We often recommend a combination of techniques. For atrophic scars that have caused significant volume loss, we can supplement treatment with dermal fillers, skin boosters or muscle relaxants to lift the tissue. We also offer chemical peels such as PRX-T33 for a smoother skin surface.

Why consider acne scar treatment?

The reasons for wanting to have acne scars removed are highly personal. Many people find that previous skin inflammation has left physical marks in the form of indentations (atrophic scars), raised areas or red marks that persist. Booking a facial treatment for acne scars is a personal choice to stimulate the tissue and even out its texture. We listen carefully to your reasons and assess your skin’s physiology, so that we can then develop an objective treatment plan fully tailored to your circumstances, without ever guaranteeing specific emotional outcomes.

Frequently asked questions about removing facial scars

Frequently asked questions and answers about removing facial scars

What is the most effective way to get rid of acne scars?

The best method depends on the depth and type of your scars. Atrophic scars (deep pits) are best treated by removing facial scars using a laser (such as fractional CO2) or microneedling/Dermapen, whilst superficial discolouration responds better to light-based treatments such as IPL.

Does laser treatment for acne scars hurt?

The experience of pain varies from person to person. For deeper laser treatments, we always apply a strong numbing cream to the area before starting. Most people describe the treatment as an intense heat or a stinging sensation, but it is generally well tolerated.

Is it possible to get rid of red acne scars?

Yes, it is possible to remove red acne scars very effectively. Red marks (post-inflammatory erythema, PIE) are caused by dilated superficial blood vessels following inflammation. We can treat these with specific IPL or vascular lasers to significantly reduce the redness much more quickly than if they were left to fade naturally.

How many treatments are needed to get rid of acne scars?

A course of treatment is often required. Depending on the method, we generally recommend between three and six sessions for atrophic scars, spaced a few weeks apart, to allow the skin time to produce new collagen and smooth out the surface texture.

Is it possible to remove acne scars on the back and body?

Absolutely. We treat acne scars on the back and décolletage. However, the skin on the back is thicker and heals differently, which means we need to adjust our equipment and treatment intensity accordingly to prevent scarring.

Is there a laser treatment for acne that is still available?

Yes, if you have active spots and breakouts, we offer a specific laser treatment for acne. This method aims to eliminate the acne-causing bacteria in the pores and reduce sebum production, which speeds up the healing process and prevents new scars from forming.

When will I be able to see the final results of my acne scar treatment?

The results are achieved gradually. As the tissue needs time to regenerate, it takes around three to six months before you can see the full effect of a collagen-stimulating treatment on the skin’s texture and plumpness.
