What is a tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty (internationally known as a tummy tuck) is a cosmetic and functional surgical procedure designed to tighten the abdominal wall. The procedure involves the surgeon removing loose excess skin and subcutaneous fat from the abdomen. In a full abdominoplasty, the underlying abdominal muscles are often tightened (if they have separated, for example following pregnancy) to restore the abdominal wall’s original anatomical stability. This creates a flatter and firmer contour across the entire abdomen.

Our approaches to abdominal plastic surgery

To restore a firm and anatomically balanced abdominal wall, our surgeons use a range of techniques, tailored precisely to the elasticity of your skin and your body’s fat distribution.

Abdominal liposuction

If you have good skin elasticity but wish to remove fat from your stomach (abdominal fat), we use micro-cannulas to gently suction out the fat cells. This tightens the contour without removing any skin.

Minor tummy tuck (upper or lower)

Focuses solely on surgically removing excess skin from the lower abdomen, below the navel. This method is often suitable if the amount of excess skin is limited.

Major/full abdominoplasty

In this procedure, excess skin is removed from across the entire abdomen and the navel is repositioned to a new, natural location. It is also standard practice during this procedure to suture together abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis) that have separated.

Circumferential abdominoplasty

A very extensive procedure intended for patients with a significant amount of excess skin (often following a gastric bypass), in which a belt-like incision is made around both the abdomen and the back. In rare cases, a vertical incision, known as a T-shaped abdominoplasty, may also be required.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of the method used, our specialists employ refined surgical techniques to minimise tissue trauma. A gentle approach is absolutely crucial to reducing bleeding, optimising your healing and ensuring that your scars are as discreet as anatomically possible.

The Evolution of You

Abdominoplasty
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how a tummy tuck is carried out at our clinic, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

The surgeon will examine your abdomen, measure the excess skin and assess your abdominal muscles. We will then decide whether liposuction, a mini-tuck or a full tummy tuck is the right procedure for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once your reflection period is over, the operation will be scheduled. It is an absolute, non-negotiable requirement that you do not smoke for four weeks before and after the procedure.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the clinic, prepared for the procedure, and will meet your surgeon and anaesthetist. The procedure usually takes 2–4 hours and is always carried out under general anaesthetic for your safety and comfort.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be monitored in the recovery room. Following major abdominal plastic surgery, it is common to stay overnight for pain relief and observation.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

For the first few weeks, you should walk with a slight forward lean to avoid stretching the scar. You must wear your compression garment around the clock at first, and heavy lifting is strictly prohibited for 4–6 weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A follow-up appointment to check the wound will take place within a couple of weeks. The final check-up with your plastic surgeon will take place after approximately six to twelve months.

Results of tummy tuck surgery

Abdominal surgery is a major procedure and healing takes time. You can often see immediately after the operation that the skin is tighter, but it is important to understand that, medically speaking, it is impossible to ‘get rid of your tummy in two weeks’. Initially, the entire abdomen is very swollen and the tissue needs to heal at its own pace. You will wear a wrap-around girdle (compression garment) for 6 weeks. The final anatomical result is only medically assessed after approximately six to twelve months, once all internal swelling has subsided and the scars have begun to fade.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your medical safety.

Who is eligible for a tummy tuck?

To undergo cosmetic surgery with us, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general health. During the consultation, a thorough assessment is carried out, which also takes your BMI into account (for extensive tummy tucks, specific BMI limits apply to minimise risks). Many people ask whether we operate on those who are overweight or have a very large stomach to help them lose weight; however, surgery is not a weight-loss method, but a procedure to remove existing excess skin once your weight has stabilised. Giving up smoking is an absolute requirement.

Complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks involved, such as bleeding, infection or uneven healing. Specific risks associated with tummy tuck surgery include some unevenness in the skin if elasticity is low, whilst risks associated with abdominoplasty may include slow wound healing at the incision site. Concerns about a failed tummy tuck are common, which is why choosing an experienced specialist surgeon and ensuring that you, as a patient, strictly adhere to the restrictions regarding smoking and rest are absolutely crucial for your medical safety.

Other procedures in cosmetic surgery

If you wish to restore your body’s contours following pregnancy, we often recommend a combination procedure, known internationally as a ‘mummy makeover’ (or colloquially as a ‘mummy tuck’). This involves combining a tummy tuck with, for example, a breast lift or breast augmentation during the same anaesthetic session. We will carefully assess your suitability during your consultation.

Why consider a tummy tuck or abdominal surgery?

There are many reasons why people might want to have abdominal surgery. Some wish to have excess skin and a sagging tummy removed following pregnancy, when the skin has lost its elasticity. Others seek help with loose skin on the stomach following weight loss, or wish to remove abdominal fat that is genetically determined. It is a personal choice to wish to reduce abdominal fat or excess skin in order to achieve a figure that feels right. We design an objective, medically sound plan that fully respects your body’s natural condition.

Frequently asked questions about the stomach and surgery

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about the stomach and surgery

How can you lose belly fat and get rid of the fat on your stomach?

Searches such as "how to get rid of belly fat", "how to reduce abdominal fat" or "how to lose belly fat" are common. From a purely physiological point of view, it is not possible to target fat loss specifically on the stomach. If you are overweight, general lifestyle changes are recommended. However, if you are of normal weight but have stubborn, genetically determined localised fat on your stomach, surgical liposuction is the only way to permanently and immediately reduce the number of fat cells in that specific area.

Is it possible to lose your belly in two weeks??

No, there are plenty of myths circulating online claiming that you can lose your belly in two weeks with extreme diets. Even with surgical procedures, where skin is removed over the course of a day, post-operative swelling is significant. It takes several months for the tissue to heal completely, contract and reveal the final result. Body contouring surgery takes time to adjust to.

Is it possible to have a skin tightening operation free of charge through the county council?

Many patients wonder about the criteria for tummy tucks funded by the county council, or whether they can have "excess skin removed by the county council" following weight loss. The public health service covers the cost of operations (for example, tummy tucks following a caesarean section via the local health authority, or excess skin following weight loss via the local health authority) only if the excess skin is extremely extensive and causes severe, documented medical problems such as fungal infections or pain. Any surgery primarily aimed at aesthetic tightening must be paid for privately at a clinic such as The Faculty. (The same regulations apply; the county council may offer a gastric sleeve free of charge in cases of severe obesity, but subsequent plastic surgery is usually at the patient’s own expense).

Is it possible to have a tummy tuck after a gastric bypass?

Yes, it is very common. Following significant weight loss, for example after a gastric bypass, there is often a large amount of excess skin left over. In such cases, a more extensive full abdominoplasty is usually performed, or sometimes a circumferential abdominoplasty, in which the heavy skin hanging like an ‘apron’ over the pubic bone is removed to restore the body’s basic anatomy.

What is a mommy makeover, and can you have your abdominal muscles tightened?

A so-called "mummy makeover" (mummy tuck) is a combined procedure in which, under the same anaesthetic, we tighten the abdomen and reshape the bust (for example, with a lift) to restore the body’s shape following pregnancy. During abdominoplasty, it is standard practice for us to also suture the abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis) that have separated, which restores the internal stability of the abdominal wall.

What is the risk of a tummy tuck going wrong?

All surgical procedures carry risks, but the term ‘failed tummy tuck’ usually refers to aesthetically unsatisfactory scarring, asymmetry or poor healing (known as necrosis). To minimise these risks, it is absolutely essential that the operation is performed by a Swedish-registered specialist in plastic surgery with extensive experience of the procedure, and that you, as a patient, strictly adhere to the ban on smoking, as nicotine restricts blood flow to the wound and directly causes severe healing problems.
