Preparing for a safe operation
Once you have had time to think it over, the operation will be scheduled. It is an absolute, non-negotiable medical requirement that you remain completely smoke-free for four weeks before and after the operation in order to ensure optimal wound healing.
The day of the operation
Safe care at the clinic
You will be admitted and prepared on the ward. You will meet your surgeon and anaesthetist to go through everything before it is time to go into the operating theatre. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort, and usually takes between 1.5 and 3 hours.
After the operation
Awakening and initial rest
You will be closely monitored in our recovery room. A pressure bandage will be applied evenly across your back. If a large area of skin has been removed, you may need to stay overnight. Afterwards, you will be able to rest and have a snack in the ward. Most people are able to go home the same day.
Recovery & healing
Self-care and convalescence guidelines
You should wear your compression garment around the clock to begin with. During the first few weeks, you must avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise so as not to hinder the healing process.
Monitoring & results
Medical check-up and final assessment
A follow-up appointment to check the wound and remove any stitches will take place after 1–2 weeks. A final check-up with your surgeon will be booked in six months’ time.

What can be done about excess skin on the back?
If you have significant excess skin on your back following, for example, a gastric bypass, simply removing subcutaneous fat is not enough. In such cases, a full back lift must be performed. The incision is usually made horizontally across the back, at a height where it can easily be concealed by a standard bra strap, after which the excess skin flap and the underlying fatty tissue are surgically removed.
Can I view photos of back liposuction on your website?
