What does a breast reduction involve?

A breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes some of the breast’s fat, glandular tissue and skin. The aim is to create a smaller, lighter bust. As the skin must be adjusted to the new, reduced volume, the procedure almost always involves a breast lift, resulting in a firmer bust with a higher-positioned nipple.

Our breast reduction techniques

Breast reduction surgery places extremely high demands on the surgeon’s anatomical knowledge. The choice of technique for breast reduction is carefully tailored to your individual circumstances and preferences. We offer four main techniques.

Traditional breast reduction (anchor incision)

This is the most common technique used for major breast reduction procedures. The surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin. Incisions are made around the areola, vertically downwards and in the breast crease. At the same time, the nipple and areola are repositioned upwards to a balanced position. If necessary, the areola can also be reduced to achieve better harmony with the reduced breast volume.

Vertical breast reduction (lollipop incision)

If you require a small or moderate reduction in breast size, this method may be suitable. The incision is made only around the areola and vertically down towards the breast crease, which means that the horizontal incision under the breast is avoided.

In combination with liposuction

We often combine the surgical reduction with gentle liposuction towards the armpit. This is done to optimise the transition and create a smoother silhouette along the sides of the chest.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our experienced plastic surgeons use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate breast tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and optimising the conditions for preserving sensation in the nipple.

The Evolution of You

Breast reduction
Step by step

For your peace of mind, we have designed a secure process, from your initial enquiry right through to your final check-up. Here is an overview of how the procedure works.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a plastic surgery specialist who will carry out a clinical examination of your breasts. You will discuss your physical condition, the expected outcome and which surgical technique is best suited to achieving a proportionate shape.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Following your consultation, you will meet with a coordinator and receive detailed information about pre-operative preparations and post-operative care. You must refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for four weeks before and after the operation. On the evening before and on the morning of the operation, you must wash thoroughly with an antiseptic chlorhexidine sponge.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, you will check in and change into a hospital gown. You will meet your surgeon for photographs and skin markings, and you will have a chat with your anaesthetist. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually takes two to three hours.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up calmly in our recovery room. It is perfectly normal to experience some swelling and tenderness in your breasts initially. We will provide you with effective pain relief. In most cases, you will go home the same day after recovering in the ward. For more extensive breast reduction procedures, you will be offered an overnight stay at the clinic for observation.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Your first few days at home should be spent resting. You must wear a fitted recovery bra around the clock and apply tape to your scars in accordance with our instructions. You must strictly avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for the first four weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

Around one to two weeks after the operation, you will see one of our nurses for a check-up on the incisions and the healing process. A final examination and follow-up photographs with your surgeon will take place after approximately six to nine months.

Results following a breast reduction

The outcome of a breast reduction is largely influenced by your original anatomy, the amount of tissue removed and your skin’s natural elasticity. In the early stages, it is normal for the breasts to be swollen and feel tight. Initially, the breasts may also sit slightly higher on the chest before gradually settling into their natural, final shape. We will closely monitor your individual healing process and evaluate the anatomical result with you after approximately six to twelve months, once the tissue has softened completely and the scars have begun to fade.

Complications and risks associated with breast reduction surgery

All surgical procedures carry medical risks. General surgical risks include bleeding, infection and uneven scar formation. Specific complications following breast reduction surgery may include asymmetry, reduced or lost sensation in the nipples, and, in rare cases, reduced blood circulation in the areola. Your surgeon will explain all potential risks in detail and how we take preventive measures to minimise them.

Why have a breast reduction?

The reasons for wanting to reduce breast size are often personal and relate to both physical and anatomical factors. A heavy bust can put strain on the neck, shoulders and back, as well as causing skin irritation. Some people feel that the size of their breasts limits their physical activity. The aim of the operation is to create a proportionate bust that balances the rest of your physique, which in turn often relieves pressure on the shoulder area. Together with your surgeon, we will draw up a bespoke plan based on your specific anatomy.

Frequently asked questions about breast reduction

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding breast reduction surgery

How much does a breast reduction cost in total?

The cost of the plastic surgery depends on the exact scope of the procedure and whether it is combined with liposuction. The exact cost of a breast reduction for your specific anatomy will be discussed during your consultation. A general breast reduction price usually starts from [Price], but the total cost of a breast reduction is always determined following an individual clinical assessment by our plastic surgeons.

Can you have a breast reduction operation paid for by the local health authority?

A common misconception is that anyone with large breasts is eligible for a free operation. To qualify for a free breast reduction, you must meet specific, strict medical criteria regarding breast size. Undergoing a breast reduction through the county council (for example, a breast reduction through the Stockholm County Council) also means that you usually cannot choose your own plastic surgeon.

How long is the waiting time for breast reduction surgery through the National Health Service compared to the private sector?

The short answer is that the waiting time for a breast reduction through the local health authority can often stretch over several years due to waiting lists. If you choose to book your breast reduction in Stockholm with The Faculty, you’ll avoid these long waiting times. We regularly welcome patients who travel to us for fast and safe specialist care, whether they are seeking a breast reduction from Uppsala, Örebro or other parts of the country.

What will my scars look like after a breast reduction?

The body always forms natural scar tissue following surgical procedures. As the procedure essentially always involves a breast reduction and lift, the incisions are made around the areola and vertically down towards the breast crease (a so-called anchor incision or lollipop incision). Your scars after breast reduction will initially be red, but we will instruct you on how to tape them carefully so that they can fade and become as discreet as possible over time.

What complications can arise following breast reduction surgery?

All surgery carries medical risks. Typical, albeit rare, complications following breast reduction surgery include asymmetry, uneven wound healing, or temporary loss of sensation in the nipples. The risk is minimised by choosing the right surgical technique and by strictly following our aftercare recommendations.

What do the results of a breast reduction look like, and are there any photos?

The anatomical outcome is always unique to each patient. The final result of a breast reduction is only fully assessed after six to twelve months, once the tissue has fully settled. During your consultation, we will look at objective before-and-after breast reduction images to illustrate what is technically possible. By studying before-and-after breast reduction case studies (also known as breast reduction before-and-after), you will gain a realistic understanding of how the operation can balance your body.

Is it possible to breastfeed after a breast reduction?

This procedure may affect your ability to breastfeed. The operation is performed very carefully, but we always inform patients that any type of breast reduction surgery carries a residual risk of limiting breastfeeding. This is because milk ducts and nerves sometimes need to be severed in order to remove tissue and reposition the nipple.
