What does chin liposuction involve?

Chin liposuction is a surgical procedure in which excess fatty tissue beneath the jawline and neck is removed using very fine cannulas. The aim is to sculpt the area and create a more defined profile. The method is used to permanently remove a double chin in patients with sufficient skin elasticity.

Our methods for chin liposuction

To achieve an anatomically proportionate result that follows the natural contours of the face and neck, our plastic surgeons always tailor their approach to your individual circumstances.

Chin liposuction

This is the primary method for removing localised fat deposits under the chin. A thin cannula is inserted through millimetre-sized incisions to gently suction out the excess fat. The procedure is particularly effective for those with good skin elasticity, as the skin is expected to tighten over the new contour afterwards. It is a precision procedure in which the surgeon sculpts the area to accentuate the jawline.

Combined procedures

If the skin lacks the elasticity to tighten naturally, liposuction can be combined with a neck lift or a chin implant to further balance the facial proportions.

Gentle technology and precision

We use modern needles and techniques that minimise trauma to the surrounding tissue. This is designed to reduce swelling after the procedure and promote a smoother healing process. During your consultation, a thorough palpation (examination by hand) is carried out to determine whether the fat is located superficially or beneath the neck muscle, which is crucial for choosing the right method.

Consultation before your operation

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Chin liposuction
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how our chin liposuction procedure works, from start to finish

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We will assess your anatomical conditions and discuss whether liposuction alone is sufficient, or whether a combined chin augmentation is the right option for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have given your consent, the operation will be scheduled. It is essential that you do not smoke for four weeks before and after the operation, as nicotine significantly impairs healing.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to hospital and meet your surgical team. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. The very small incisions are strategically concealed under the chin or behind the earlobes.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest in our monitored recovery ward. A stabilising compression bandage will be applied around your head and chin to provide even pressure. You will usually be able to go home the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

For the first one to two weeks, you should wear the bandage as instructed by your plastic surgeon. You should avoid strenuous exercise for three to four weeks so as not to disturb the healing tissue.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We will arrange regular appointments with a nurse for wound checks. After about six months, we will meet for a final check-up with your surgeon.

Results following chin liposuction

The outcome following surgery to remove a double chin is largely influenced by the skin’s natural ability to contract to fit the new, reduced volume. In the early stages, it is entirely to be expected that the area will be swollen, feel tight and be discoloured by bruising. The skin and underlying tissues need time to soften and adapt to their new position. We will monitor your healing process closely and evaluate the final anatomical result with you after approximately six to twelve months.

Why consider chin liposuction?

The decision to have a double chin removed is a very personal one. Many people experience a stubborn, genetically determined build-up of fat under the chin that is very difficult to reduce through diet or exercise. Others wish for a more defined jawline as the elasticity of the skin and tissue has changed over the years. The motivation to seek plastic surgery to remove a double chin is highly individual. We listen carefully to your reasons and design a realistic, medically sound treatment plan that respects your anatomical features and creates a balanced and symmetrical result.

Frequently asked questions about chin liposuction

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about chin liposuction

How can you get rid of a double chin permanently?

Fat cells removed through surgical liposuction do not regrow. This means that, as long as you maintain a stable body weight, it is a very effective way of permanently removing a double chin. However, if you gain a significant amount of weight, the remaining fat cells in the area may become larger. .

How can you get rid of a double chin without surgery?

For those who wish to reduce a double chin without surgery, we offer injection treatments (such as Belkyra) that are specifically designed to break down small pockets of fat under the chin. However, the results are rarely as dramatic as those achieved through surgery.

Will the operation leave me with large scars?

No. The entry points for the cannulas are only a few millimetres in size. These small incisions are strategically placed in the skin’s natural creases under the chin and behind the ears, meaning that the scars left after chin liposuction are extremely discreet and often almost invisible once they have fully healed.

What are the risks associated with chin surgery and chin implants?

If your operation involves a chin implant, there are specific risks involved, such as the implant becoming displaced or the formation of a capsule (hard scar tissue) around it. During the consultation, the surgeon will explain exactly how we work to prevent this.

What will my recovery be like, and when will I be able to go back to work?

Most people can return to sedentary, non-physical work after about a week, once the most severe swelling has subsided. You will need to wear a supportive compression bandage (chin strap) around the clock initially. Physical exercise and activities that raise your heart rate should be avoided completely for about four weeks to ensure a good healing process.

Is it possible to have a mini-liposuction procedure to remove a double chin?

Yes, if it is simply a very small, localised build-up of fat under the chin, the procedure can be limited to that specific area. Such an operation is shorter and can be carried out easily under local anaesthetic alone.

What type of anaesthetic is used for chin liposuction?

The procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic combined with sedation, or under general anaesthetic. Which option is medically most appropriate depends on the extent of the procedure, whether it is to be combined with other procedures (such as a neck lift) and your individual anatomical characteristics. During your consultation, your surgeon and our anaesthetist will discuss this thoroughly with you to ensure that you feel completely at ease throughout the operation.
