What does back liposuction involve?

Liposuction of the back is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to permanently reduce the number of fat cells in selected areas. The treatment usually focuses on deposits around the bra line on the upper back or downwards along the flanks. Through millimetre-sized incisions, the surgeon inserts a thin cannula that gently removes the tissue. The method demands a high degree of anatomical precision and experience to avoid asymmetry and achieve an even and proportionate reduction in the volume of the back.

Our techniques for liposuction of the flanks and back

We use modern surgical techniques to gently remove fat cells along the back. As the tissue in this area has a specific and often firmer texture, the technique is tailored to the individual. Our primary focus is to work with the body’s natural contours to create a balanced and proportionate transition between the back, waist and hips.

Upper back liposuction (bra bulges)

This is the primary method for reducing localised fat deposits around the shoulder blades and just below the bra line. During liposuction, specialised medical equipment is used to ensure the procedure is carried out in a controlled, safe and highly precise manner. As the skin on the back is often thick and tight, the procedure requires a high degree of precision, where we work methodically to preserve the tissue’s natural structure and create a smoother contour without causing unnecessary trauma to the skin.

Liposuction of the flanks and lower back

For patients who experience an increase in volume around the hips and lower back, whilst retaining good skin elasticity, targeted liposuction of the flanks is often a highly effective option. The procedure focuses on sculpting the shape of the flanks (love handles) and the lower back down towards the buttocks. The method is gentle and produces well-defined contours without surgically removing skin.

Assessment of skin quality and surgical options

In cases where liposuction alone is not medically justified – for example, where there is significant excess skin and sagging following substantial weight loss – we assess the skin’s ability to contract. During your consultation, a thorough clinical assessment is carried out to determine whether the skin has the ability to contract on its own, or whether more advanced surgery involving surgical skin removal (backplasty) is required to achieve a lasting and even result.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of the method chosen, we use modern, tissue-sparing equipment that minimises the impact on blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic vessels. This is essential for reducing post-operative swelling and promoting the smoothest possible healing process.
We place great importance on open communication, during which we discuss both the possibilities and limitations based on your individual circumstances. Our aim is for you to feel confident that the decision regarding your procedure is based on medical expertise, careful assessment and realistic expectations.

Consultation prior to liposuction of the back/flanks

The first step is a personal consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. You can, of course, choose between a digital consultation or an in-person visit to the clinic, depending on what suits you best.
During the consultation, we will carry out a thorough medical assessment, during which we will discuss your circumstances, preferences and goals. You will receive clear information about possible treatment options, expected results, risks and current waiting times.
Based on your unique anatomy, we develop a bespoke treatment plan designed to achieve the most harmonious and natural result possible.

Following the consultation, you will be given at least seven days to consider your options, allowing you to decide at your leisure whether you wish to proceed and give your consent to treatment.

The Evolution of You

Liposuction of the back
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how our back liposuction procedure works, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with your plastic surgery specialist, who will carry out a thorough medical assessment of your skin and fatty tissue to determine whether the procedure is suitable for you. Once you have received all the medical information regarding risks and techniques, you will have a cooling-off period of at least seven days before giving your consent to the procedure.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Our coordinator will provide you with important information. Among other things, you will need to stop smoking and drinking alcohol for four weeks beforehand. You should also wash with chlorhexidine soap before you arrive.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, you will change into surgical scrubs. Your surgeon will mark the area on your back that is to be treated, and you will meet your anaesthetist. The procedure takes place in a fully sterile environment, under general anaesthetic, and lasts 1–2 hours.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up safely in our monitored recovery ward. It is normal for your back to feel sore, stiff and swollen. Our team will monitor your condition and ensure you receive the right pain relief. You will usually stay overnight for 24 hours before you can leave the clinic with your discharge instructions.+

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

You will need to wear a compression garment around the clock for the first few weeks to support your new figure and reduce swelling. You should avoid heavy lifting and physical exercise for at least four weeks, but gentle, short walks are good for your circulation.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After a week, you will have your first follow-up appointment with one of our experienced nurses for a routine wound check. A final follow-up appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled in about six months’ time to assess the healing process and photograph the results.

Results of back liposuction

As everyone’s anatomy is different, the outcome of the procedure will always be specific to your body. The fat cells removed during back liposuction are gone for good. This creates a lasting reduction in volume in the treated areas, provided you maintain a stable body weight. Generally, patients experience a smoother contour and a more balanced silhouette across the torso. How well the tissue adapts to the new profile is strongly linked to your genetic skin elasticity, which is particularly important as the connective tissue in the back is naturally firm. The swelling subsides gradually, and we carry out a final assessment of the results after approximately six months together with your plastic surgeon.

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for back liposuction?

To be eligible for the procedure, you must be at least 18 years old, in good general health and have a relatively stable body weight. A key factor in back surgery is the elasticity of the skin; it must be able to tighten over the new, reduced volume. During the consultation, a thorough health assessment is carried out. Certain underlying conditions or active infections may mean that, for patient safety reasons, we recommend that you refrain from surgery.

Risks associated with back liposuction

As with any surgical procedure, there are medical risks involved. These include bleeding, infection or asymmetry during the healing process. Your plastic surgeon will go through these factors in detail and explain how we at the clinic take preventive measures to minimise them.

Other procedures in cosmetic surgery

Plastic surgery is always about proportions. In addition to localised liposuction, we offer a wide range of body contouring procedures. If you have a significant amount of excess skin, perhaps as a result of significant weight loss, liposuction alone is sometimes not enough. In such cases, your plastic surgeon will help you find the right combination of, for example, skin tightening (plastic surgery) and fat reduction to achieve a balanced and symmetrical result.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn localised fat deposits and refine the body’s natural contours. Depending on your anatomical conditions, we use either classic liposuction, gentle VASER liposuction, or a combination of liposuction and skin tightening using laser/Renuvion. In some cases, the procedure is also combined with liposculpture, where the fat is reused to sculpt and enhance other parts of the body. During your consultation, we will go through the methods in detail to find the option that best suits your body’s characteristics.

Frequently asked questions about back liposuction

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding back liposuction

Will it hurt after the operation?

Pain varies from person to person, but most patients experience a tight sensation, tenderness and swelling across their back during the first few days, much like severe muscle soreness after exercise. We prescribe painkillers to keep you comfortable during the early stages of your recovery.

Is the result permanent?

Yes, the fat cells that are removed during the procedure cannot be regenerated by the body. However, it is very important that you maintain a stable weight after the operation, as the remaining fat cells may increase in size if you put on weight.

When can I go back to work?

If you have a sedentary job, you can often return to work after one to two weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure. Physically demanding jobs require a longer period of sick leave.

Do I have to sleep on my stomach after the operation?

It is usually most comfortable to sleep on your stomach or side during the initial period, to avoid direct pressure and discomfort on the treated and swollen areas of your back.

Will there be visible scars after liposuction on the back?

The scars will be very small, usually only about three to five millimetres in diameter. Your surgeon will position the incisions as discreetly as possible, and the scars will gradually fade over the course of the first year.

How long do I need to wear compression garments?

We usually recommend that you wear the compression garment around the clock for three to four weeks, and then during the day for a few more weeks. Your plastic surgeon will give you specific instructions.

What signs of infection should I look out for?

Contact the clinic immediately if you experience a fever, increasing redness, throbbing pain or a sudden, significant increase in swelling in the area where the operation was performed.
