What does a neck lift involve?

A neck lift (medically known as a neck plasty) is a surgical procedure that focuses on the neck and the lower jawline. The aim is to tighten loose skin and the underlying superficial neck muscle (platysma). By repositioning the muscle higher up and removing any fatty tissue and excess skin, a clearer and more defined angle is created between the chin and the neck.

Our techniques for neck lifts

To achieve an anatomically sound and long-lasting result that follows the natural contours of the neck, our surgeons work on the underlying tissues and muscles, not just the skin.

Classic neck lift

The most comprehensive procedure, in which the superficial neck muscle (platysma) is tightened and excess skin is removed to create a smoother, firmer profile.

Mini neck lift / Localised neck lift

A minor procedure that is often recommended if you have good skin elasticity but need a slight tightening of the muscles under the chin.

Mini liposuction and neck lift

When the loss of definition is primarily due to fat accumulation under the chin, a neck lift is often combined with gentle liposuction of the chin and jawline (sometimes referred to as a Z-lift or neck Z-lift, depending on the specific technique used for the muscle).

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and creating the very best conditions for your neck lift scars to be as discreet as possible.

The Evolution of You

Neck lift
Step by step

For your peace of mind, we have designed a secure process, from your initial enquiry right through to your final check-up. Here is an overview of how the procedure works.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We will assess your anatomical conditions and discuss whether a mini facelift, liposuction alone, or a full surgical facelift is the right option for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once the reflection period is over, your operation will be booked. You will receive clear instructions, including a strict requirement to stop smoking four weeks before and after the operation, as well as advice on what to avoid in the run-up to the operation.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the hospital and meet your surgeon and anaesthetist. The incisions are made in strategic locations, usually behind the ears and under the chin, depending on the technique used. The procedure usually takes 2–3 hours.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest in our monitored recovery ward. A stabilising bandage will be applied around your neck to provide even pressure. Some patients stay overnight.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

For the first few weeks, you should sleep with your head elevated and avoid turning your neck sharply. You should avoid physical exercise and heavy lifting for at least a month.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We will schedule regular check-ups to remove any stitches and monitor the healing of the scar. We will meet for a final check-up after about six months.

Results following a neck lift

The results of a neck lift are largely influenced by your original anatomy, the weight of your muscles and your skin’s natural ability to contract. In the early stages, it is entirely to be expected that the area around the neck and jawline will be swollen, feel tight and be discoloured by bruising. The skin and underlying tissues need time to soften and adapt to their new position. We closely monitor your individual healing process and evaluate the final anatomical result with you after approximately six to twelve months, once the scars have begun to fade.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.

Who is eligible for a neck lift?

To book a cosmetic surgical procedure, you must be over 18 years of age and in good general health. During your consultation, we will carry out a thorough medical assessment to ensure that your anatomical conditions are suitable for the procedure. It is a strict medical requirement that you are completely smoke-free in the run-up to the operation, as nicotine impairs blood circulation and significantly increases the risk of healing complications.

Possible complications and risks

All surgical procedures carry risks. For neck lifts, the general risks include bleeding, infection or asymmetrical healing. More specific risks for this area include thick scarring (scars from a neck lift can sometimes be visible behind the ears) or a temporary effect on small sensory nerves causing numbness. Your surgeon will provide detailed information about these risks and our safety procedures during your consultation.

Other facial surgery treatments

In addition to standalone neck lifts, we offer several other bespoke procedures. A neck lift is very often combined with a full or lower facelift to create a balanced transition all the way from the cheeks to the neck. It is also common to include eyelid surgery for a more comprehensive procedure during the same anaesthesia session.

Why consider a neck lift?

As we age, the structure of the skin changes, and the muscles in the neck can lose their natural tone, which affects the contour of the neck and jawline. Many people choose to undergo a neck lift for their own well-being, with a desire to achieve a tighter profile and a more defined transition between the chin and neck. The motivation for seeking plastic surgery is highly personal. We listen carefully to your reasons and devise a realistic, medically sound plan that respects your anatomical features without altering your fundamental appearance.

Frequently asked questions about neck lifts

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding neck lifts

Are there any non-surgical methods for a neck lift?

Many patients ask about "thread lifts" (non-surgical thread neck lifts), "laser neck lifts", "Renuvion neck lifts" or injection treatments such as the so-called "Nefertiti neck lift". These non-surgical alternatives can provide some skin tightening or temporarily reduce muscle activity. However, if you have significant excess skin or heavy, sagging neck muscles, none of these methods can provide the same extensive and lasting anatomical restructuring as an actual plastic surgery procedure.

What will my scars look like after a neck lift?

When it comes to neck lift scars, the incisions are made very discreetly. Usually, an incision is made just below the chin, in a natural crease, along with incisions that run around the earlobe and up to the hairline behind the ear. This positioning ensures that the scars are well concealed. Initially, they are red and may feel firm, but with the right aftercare and taping, they gradually fade over the first six to twelve months and become very difficult to detect for the vast majority of patients.

Is the procedure carried out under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic?

In the vast majority of cases, a full neck lift is performed under general anaesthetic. This ensures that you sleep safely and pain-free whilst the surgeon works with the utmost precision on the deeper tissues of the neck. For certain minor procedures, such as isolated and limited liposuction under the chin, local anaesthesia combined with sedatives may sometimes be an option, but for muscle tightening, general anaesthesia is almost always recommended.

Can a neck lift be combined with liposuction under the chin?

Yes, it is very common to combine a neck lift, jawline liposuction and chin liposuction in a single procedure. If there are localised pockets of fat under the chin (double chin) that cannot be eliminated through exercise, a gentle mini-liposuction can be performed first. The surgeon then tightens the muscles and removes the skin. This combination often results in the most defined and balanced profile of the jawline.

How long does a neck lift last?

A surgical neck lift does not slow down your body’s natural ageing process, but it creates a firmer and tighter underlying structure. Many patients find that the anatomical results last for 10 to 15 years, depending on genetics, skin quality and lifestyle (such as sun exposure and smoking). Although the skin will eventually begin to lose elasticity again, the contour of the neck will, anatomically speaking, appear firmer than it would have done without the procedure.

Where can I read about someone who has had a neck lift?

It is wise to seek information and hear other people’s perspectives when considering surgery. You can often find patient stories online if you search for “has anyone had a neck lift?” or “neck lift blog”. Bear in mind, however, that other people’s experiences of pain and healing are subjective and may not necessarily reflect how your own body will react. On our website, we publish reviews from verified patients via Trustpilot, which can provide a reliable and accurate picture of the care we provide.

Why do prices vary (cost of a neck lift)?

The fact that neck lift prices in Stockholm and general neck lift prices vary between different clinics is down to several factors. These include the specific technique used, the duration of the procedure, whether an overnight stay is required, as well as the surgeon’s level of expertise and the clinic’s safety standards. The price of a neck lift can therefore vary, but with us you always receive a comprehensive quote that includes everything from the consultation to anaesthesia and a year of follow-up care.
