What are PRP and mesotherapy for the hair?

What exactly is PRP treatment for hair, from a purely scientific point of view? PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. By centrifuging your own blood, we isolate and concentrate your platelets. These platelets are packed with natural growth factors and proteins. When these are then injected back into your scalp, they act as a powerful biological signal that revives ‘tired’ hair follicles, prolongs the hair’s growth phase and increases local blood flow. Mesotherapy is based on a similar injection technique, but instead of blood plasma, a ready-made, medical nutrient cocktail is used.

Our methods for promoting hair growth and stronger hair

We use only evidence-based injection techniques to reactivate dormant hair follicles. Your specialist will assess which method is medically most suitable for your scalp.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

A tried-and-tested method in which we use platelets from your own blood. This plasma is extremely rich in natural growth factors, which are injected into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles, improve blood circulation and prolong the hair’s growth phase.

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

A PRF hair treatment is a further development of PRP, in which the plasma is centrifuged at a slower speed to create a fibrin network that releases growth factors over an even longer period of time.

Mesotherapy for hair

This is an excellent treatment in which we inject a bespoke medical cocktail of vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly into the hair roots.

Gentle approach

A fundamental principle underlying all our scalp injection treatments is a deep respect for the microscopic anatomy of the skin and hair follicles. Whether we are performing PRP or mesotherapy for hair, we use extremely fine micro-needles. These deliver the plasma or nutrients to exactly the right depth in the dermis – precisely where the hair follicle is anchored. Our methods are designed to activate the roots from within, which is physiologically superior to a superficial hair growth serum that rarely penetrates the skin barrier. This methodical approach protects the surrounding tissue, makes the procedure gentle and ensures that the growth factors provide maximum anatomical benefit.

Pre-treatment consultation

The first step is to book a consultation. During this appointment, we will assess your scalp, discuss common causes of hair loss in both men and women, and check whether your hair follicles are still active. You will receive factual information about the process, the expected timeframe before you see results, and how your treatment plan should be structured.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the consultation, you have a statutory reflection period of at least 48 hours to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

PRP treatment
Step by step

We follow a rigorous clinical process from diagnosis to recovery, designed to maximise effectiveness and ensure your safety.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet our qualified specialist, who will examine your scalp. We will carefully review your medical history to rule out any underlying blood disorders and determine whether PRP or mesotherapy is the medically appropriate treatment for your type of hair thinning.

Before your treatment

Preparations for safe treatment

Relatively little preparation is required. However, we recommend that you wash your hair thoroughly on the morning of the appointment and avoid applying any styling products (such as dry shampoo or wax) to your scalp. You should also drink plenty of water the day before to make the blood test itself easier.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

When you arrive at the clinic, we will take a standard blood sample from your arm. The tube is then immediately placed in a medical centrifuge to carefully separate the nutrient-rich blood plasma and platelets from the red blood cells.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

There is no recovery period; you can return to work straight away. However, the first 24 hours are critical for the outcome. You must not wash your hair, wear tight-fitting hats or engage in strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours, in order to allow the plasma to work undisturbed and to prevent infection at the injection sites.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

Cell regeneration takes time, and PRP is always carried out as a course of treatment – usually three to four sessions at four-week intervals. A few months after your final session, we will book a follow-up appointment for a final assessment of the structure of the new hair strands.

Results of PRP treatment

Stimulating hair growth in women or men using PRP is a biological process based on your body’s own cell regeneration. Unlike a surgical hair transplant, this method involves reactivating your existing hair follicles. The expected results of PRP hair treatment (as well as mesotherapy hair treatment) emerge gradually. The first sign is usually that the hair loss itself slows down after a few weeks. New, stronger strands and increased density then become most apparent after three to six months. The method provides a natural improvement in hair quality, but it does not regrow hair on completely bald skin.

Our specialists

At The Faculty in Stockholm, there is a hand-picked team of qualified nurses and doctors. Assessing and treating hair thinning requires in-depth knowledge of the hair growth phases (anagen, catagen and telogen phases) as well as the blood’s ability to heal tissue. This collective medical expertise is your greatest assurance of a safe procedure.

Who can undergo the treatment?

The procedure is best suited to healthy individuals over the age of 18 who are experiencing gradual hair loss, where the hair follicles are still alive but have entered a premature resting phase. This applies to both hair loss treatments for women and hair loss treatments for men. During your consultation, we will ensure that there are no medical contraindications. If you are completely bald on the crown (meaning a total absence of living hair follicles), or suffer from certain blood disorders or autoimmune diseases, the method will not be effective. For safety reasons, we do not treat pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Risks and complications

As we use only your own, autologous material in PRP and PRF treatments, there is no risk of allergic reactions or rejection. Specific side effects of PRP hair treatments are therefore extremely rare. The physiologically normal reactions are temporary tenderness of the scalp, mild swelling and, occasionally, a slight tension headache during the first 24 hours. In very rare cases, a superficial bacterial infection may occur if the injection sites are exposed to dirt before they have healed. The specialist will explain in detail how we work to prevent this.

Other treatments

Sometimes thinning hair is caused by an inflamed or unbalanced scalp rather than genetics. If you primarily suffer from flaky, extremely dry skin or blocked hair follicles, we recommend a deep mechanical scalp cleansing treatment, such as Hydrafacial Keravive, to create an optimal environment before your PRP treatment begins.

Why consider a treatment for hair loss?

Experiencing a sudden or gradual thinning of the hair is very common, and the motivation to address it is highly personal. Hair loss in women is often triggered by hormonal changes, such as hair loss following pregnancy, during the menopause, or in connection with PCOS. Other common factors include temporary hair loss due to stress, or hereditary hair loss in men. We do not judge your reasons for seeking help. Our primary focus is to tailor a hair loss treatment that maximises your biological potential, based on an objective and clinical analysis of your scalp.

Frequently asked questions about PRP and hair loss

Frequently asked questions about PRP and hair loss

How many PRP treatments for hair are needed?

As your hair grows in slow, unsynchronised cycles, a basic course of three to four treatments is usually required, spaced approximately three to four weeks apart (how many PRP hair treatments are needed). This is done to ensure that we have time to stimulate as many hair follicles as possible during their active phase.

How long does a PRP treatment for hair last?

The results of the new, stronger hair are semi-permanent. However, as PRP does not treat the underlying cause of hereditary hair loss, your body will eventually return to its natural cycle. To maintain the effect (how long does PRP treatment last for hair), we generally recommend a single maintenance treatment every six to twelve months.

Does PRP work for everyone suffering from hair loss?

Does PRP work for hair loss? Yes, its medical efficacy in slowing down hair thinning and increasing hair thickness is well documented, provided you still have viable hair follicles. However, the method does not work on completely bald areas (where the hair follicle is dead), or if the hair loss is due to untreated medical conditions.

Is there any difference between hair loss treatment for men and for women?

In terms of injection technique and biology, PRP treatment is exactly the same for men and women. What differs is how and where the hair is thinning, as well as the underlying causes (for example, male-pattern baldness versus diffuse hair loss or hormonal imbalances in women). We tailor the injection sites to your unique anatomy.

What exactly is the difference between PRP, PRF and mesotherapy?

PRP isolates the platelets in a liquid plasma. PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is centrifuged more slowly without any additives, creating a gel-like structure that remains in the tissue for longer and releases growth factors over time. Mesotherapy does not use your blood at all, but is a ready-mixed medical solution containing vitamins and moisture. Sometimes the methods are combined for maximum hair loss treatment in Stockholm.

Can I combine the injections with my usual hair growth serum at home?

Yes, it is usually perfectly fine to combine injections with a topical serum (such as Minoxidil) to treat the condition from both the inside and the outside. However, you should avoid massaging active serums into the scalp for the first 24–48 hours after your injection treatment to prevent chemical irritation at the injection sites.

Do scalp injections hurt?

The experience of pain is always individual. As the scalp is extremely rich in nerve endings, some patients may find the pricks quite intense, particularly around the temples. However, we use very fine needles and a quick, methodical technique, which means that the vast majority of patients tolerate the treatment very well.
